Mobile phone upgrades and keeping all old contracts on your account even if you no longer own them

Does anyone have the same issue ? I have a sky mobile account and have some of my children on my account too , I'm really confused by this only allowed 5 phones/sims/accessories at any one point . They keep telling me I have swap updates on our phones where by you can sell your phone to pay off your contract , but why do all of your old accounts that have been paid off still stay on the account , surely if you have paid it off more than 14 months ago it should be removed to make more availability to have other devices. Also I recently upgraded my sons phone only for them to cancel it due to lack of availability on the colour choice and then told me they can't offer my the swap now as the phone they've just cancelled will still remain on my account , I mean what hell is this system it makes absolutely no sense. Is there  way to resolve this?  , as they keep saying there's nothing they can do .

If a phone has been paid off and/or returned to Sky then while it might appear on the account as you are no longer paying for it then  it does not count as one of the 5 that you can have on your account. I would be surprised if a cancelled one does either and with regards to the swap mobile being cancelled due to no stock that does seem harsh so you might want to put in a complaint about this:
