Macbook Air M4 problem with keyboard

Hi everyone!

After the latest macOS update my keyboard stopped working properly on the login screen. I tried changing the keyboard language, but no matter which input source I select, it still types strange symbols like “ÂÂÂÔÔÔ” instead of normal letters. Because of this, I cannot enter my password and log in. I spoke with an Apple's support,

they told me that I have to buy an external keyboard or go to the point service (2 hours away from me).

Could you please help me fix this issue?

Re: Macbook Air M4 problem with keyboard

I bought a MacBook last month through Sky, so it's a joke that the new laptop doesn't work properly anymore and Apple is forcing me to buy a keyboard.

Sounds like a software-related issue as the problem occurred after an update.

Apple are not forcing you to buy a keyboard - but I suspect you need to temporarily connect a different keyboard to workaround this issue (thus why taking it to an Apple store where they can assist)

It doesn't appear to be a Sky issue.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

@Blueberry90 The following has a 50/50 chance of working so its worth trying,

  1. Hold down the option key

  2. While still holding down the option key, press caps lock

  3. Let go of both

That should reset the keyboard to normal, if it works and you can log in it may be worth then trying the following to see if it stops the issue happening again,

  1. Open System Settings

  2. In the search bar type 'modifier keys'.

  3. Select 'Customize modifier keys'.

  4. Navigate to 'Option Key'

  5. Switch the function from 'Option' to 'No Action'.
