I have signed up to a new iphone Sky contract. I need to know how to stop all my data being used when my phone has been turned off and not even used. I bought it to take on my frequent visits to London because I could never get a signal with Three network. I previously had a pay as you go, £5 a month sim and always only used about £3 of data so you can see how little I use a phone. Last weekend, I took my new phone to London, all charged up and ready, came to use it only to find that I had used all my data. How? What settings should I have, or not have, on my phone so that my data isn't been used? My data usage on my settings shows no usage! Help.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreHi @Soupy1 what data plan did you sign up for ? If it's your first month then you don't get your full allowance as it's pro ratered fo the number of days to your billing date. The next month you get the full allowance. Check you haven't signed up for the 100mb plan as that is a tiny amount of data and will be used in seconds on a modern smart phone.

I have signed up for the smallest amount of data. As I said, I just want it for a phone call home when I'm away. I bought it for the camera mainly.

The smallest amount available, which was included with the phone.

If it's the 100mb then that's why it's run out. That is too small for a smart phone and is intended for use on other devices on your account and can be topped up from the account piggybank.

I've just checked and it is the 100mb plan, which was free with the phone. Nowhere does it say that this is too low for an iphone. Might just have to abndone it and go back to my pay as you go.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreYes @Soupy1 that's not enough for a smart phone, 100mb will be used in seconds by an iPhone. A few gig of data required these days.

Oh dear. Looks like I've just wasted my money. According to Sky's description it should do what I want it to do.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreThe 100Mb plan is useful if you have an existing SIM and a large piggybank built up or if you only want to use calls/texts.
For data it's not really appropriate for general use alone...

Sky's contracts consist of 2 parts. The device plan and the dataplan.
You chose the 'free' dataplan. Of course the device plan isn't free!
You can change the dataplan every month if you wish. (But won't be free)
...or if you've had the contract less than 31 days (cooling off period) you can return it.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreYou have a 31 day cooling off period in which you can cancel the phone and sim contract @Soupy1 call sky on 150 to do this or just change the sim plan to a one that gives a bit more data. For information all phones supplied by sky are unlocked and can be used on any network sim. Something else to think about is quite often that 100 m sim is free for 12 months then it has a monthly cost, so either cancel now if you don't want it or remember to do it in 12 months time.
