Will I be expecting a massive bill on my return to the UK if I use my phone normally when I'm in Morocco ?

Yes. Morocco is a 'rest of world' country on the tariff so expensive.

That was due to an "outdated sim card" - what nonsense.

Yes: a terrible excuse. The only possible mitigation was that the billing on the account didn't have either a spending cap or (apparently) any alerts.
