Can any one explain what an eSIM is actually for if it doesn't reduce data roaming charges outside of the UK please.

Hi @Simbob23 it does away with the need for a physical sim.

Potentially, yes. A physical SIM from an Indian network replacing your Sky SIM would do so, and you would be charged whatever the SIM network provider sets as fees (but with no access to your Sky contract allowances). That should make local calls cheap, data potentially cheaper than 'roaming', and reaching the UK very expensive.
In theory populating an eSIM with local provider credentials and then using that alongside a physical SIM issued in a different country is one of the advantages of the technology, but frankly it's in its infancy and requires negotiating whatever bureaucracy the local provider requires in terms of obtaining the eSIM in the first place.

A quick search online shows various providers claiming to have eSIM-based service with lower rates in India: the idea is that you subscribe to one of these services and populate the eSIM with those credentials before you depart .
Note that it's really important in such use that you know which SIM is active, as inadvertently using Sky for data access over an Indian cellular network would be incredibly expensive.
