Beware of fraudsters

This week, I received a phone from Sky Mobile which I did not order (I am not a Sky customer). Within minutes of the delivery, I received a phone call from 'Sky' (the caller ID was flagged as suspected spam) with instructions to return the phone to 'Sky'. Some sick individuals appear to have set up a contract in my name, using my bank account information and are now trying to claim their phone!

Having the phone delivered to my address for me to the forward on would make it more difficult for Sky to track.

I had Royal Mail arrive yesterday with a returns label to collect the phone. I turned Royal Mail away, although I did take note of the return address (which is not Sky). I have since received an email pretending to be from 'Sky' containing a QR code that is to be printed and affixed to the box for me to then drop off at a Post Office. Scanning the QR code shows the same return address as what was on the Royal Mail returns label.

I have notified Sky, my bank and the Police.

This message is written just in the hope that if it happens to anyone else, don't panic and do not follow any instructions other than those given when you contact Sky through their legitimate phone numbers.

Yes it's a common scam at the moment.

The plan is to order expensive items from your account and for you to return the device to the fraudsters.  They have the device, you're paying for it...

The usual MO is that they call you to compromise your account to order the device(s).  If you did not receive a call then it's possible your account  has been compromised - possibly due to password reuse.  I'd recommend changing your password immediately (to something unique).

Not exactly: it's delivered to your address because Sky thinks the order is from you.  That's why the criminals have to arrange the bogus 'return' so it ends up in their hands.

Indeed.  From Sky's perspective 'you' have ordered the phone so you will be paying for it...  if you decide to 'give' it away the that's your problem, not Sky's...
