Apple Watch and esim

Does the E-sim I see now available mean we can now connect our Apple Watches? Or do we still have to wait for specified data plans etc ?

Re: Apple Watch and esim

Not at the moment.

eSIM support needs pairing with specific backend changes for Apple Watch (crucially the ability to share a single number between 2 devices and therefore SIMs).

Apple carry a list of cellular supported carriers here: https://www.apple.com/watch/cellular/

Sky have been giving the same response for at least two years.  Can anybody explain how long the future is.

Re: Apple Watch and esim

Sky piggy backs of o2 network, Apple Watch is the number 1 selling watch in the world. so with this in mind would you as o2 would lessen your new USP? Sky network already has some of the best deals on a new phone pair that with changing your trafif whenever a good deals come along. It just makes business sense for o2 to hold out for as long as possible, so if people want cellular on their watch now you have to leave sky. The same is said for all the networks that support Apple Watch cellular, with companies like sky they would have lost out on a lot of customers, and yes they get a cut but not as much if people were to go directly through them. So it's better for them all to have a reason like cellular on your watch to get your cash.

Re: Apple Watch and esim

It's nothing to do with o2. Yes Sky use their network, but that is literally just buying capacity, no more. To support watch sims (specifically Apple Watch) hardware and software changes will need to be implemented in skys servers (the ones that then go on to connect to o2). That is what's preventing watch sims launching, not o2.

Re: Apple Watch and esim

Hi does anyone know if this is now possible with Sky? I want to upgrade my apple watch but it's looking like I need to leave sky in order to do this....

Hi @Emily2024 sky still don't support esims in smart watches and have only said it's coming but with no timescale.

I suppose it depends how much you need the cellular functions @Emily2024 , I have the Apple Watch 9 GPS version and it works great for what I need, I don't need/want to be able to make calls etc and leave my phone at home and just use the watch.

Re: Apple Watch and esim

Your right it shouldn't have anything to do with o2. But think about this, the only networks to support Apple Watch cellular are the ones that own there own networks. In my opinion I think all the main networks have either made a deal to not offer them a financially viable option or have said they will help to implement it at some later date. Sky more than has the money to set up and  support e-sim for watches, and the fact that they are now offering e-sim contracts proves this. I would think sky would want to hold on to as many customers as they can, and having the few people leave or not join because of there watch would be something they sort out if they could.

Re: Apple Watch and esim

As I have said elsewhere previously,  SKY have had the same message for at least three years so don't expect a response in the near future.

esim and apple watches and smart watches - when?

I have an Apple Watch and it has its own cellular capability, but as yet Sky don't have the availability to have this working.

Their site just say's 'not yet, we're working on it'.

Are they?  they've been saying this for ages.

How hard can it be,? they already have esims avaiable,

To me, it just seems that once again, Sky users are behind other providers.

Come on Sky, pull your finger out!

If that's functionality you require then use another provider.

There's no published date for compatibility.

Re: esim and apple watches and smart watches - when?

Thatnks,

Yes I know I could use another provider, but I have my phone with Sky, and you can't use two sims, or esims from seperate provders.

So the suggestion although  quick, is no help.

Thanks anyway.
