25GB roaming restriction

Afternoon all,

When did the 25GB monthly roaming restriction come in?

I have been loading up my piggy bank to tether to the TV and share with the kids when we go to Spain (been doing this for years), but I've just noticed that there's now this monthly restriction - we usually use around 250GB while we're away.

Seems pointless banking data if you can't actually use it how you want to, and it was the single reason I put my kids on a Sky sim.

Hi Dave,

Yeah I've seen that - that's what prompted the post. Definitely wasn't this restriction last year.

@bionicmanc  I've asked the question in the closed forum we have access to, I'll post back if I get an answer

I've been through the past tariff guides and it first appears on 30 May 2025.

It changed from 'As UK Plan' to 'Data usage exceeding 25GB is charged at £2.50 per GB within each billing period'.

The contract links to the tariff - but I would have expected some notification of this change (there doesn't appear to have been any specific notification of this but one should always check the latest tariff guide).

@bionicmanc  the only thing that has changed recently is that data is now only stored for 12 months anything older than that was culled on the 4th June

communicate on the change was included in the April 24 price increase notification

Re: 25GB roaming restriction

The lastest Sky Mobile Tariff Guide from 8 July states on Page 9 "Data - As per UK Plan. Data usage exceeding 25GB is charged at £2.50 per GB within each billing period" and the Fair Use Policy (see here https://www.sky.com/help/articles/sky-mobile-fair-usage-policy) states "When you roam using our Roaming Passport Plus, we consider that up to 25GB per billing period is a reasonable amount of data to use. If you exceed this amount, we'll assume that you're no longer using data in the way expected of a reasonable customer for periodic travel."

I used hundreds of GB last year and this was definitely not in place.

@SKY1992bf There is a limit of 25GB on roaming passport plus, I'm not sure if it's new but it's outlined on this page https://www.sky.com/help/articles/Sky-Mobile-fair-usage-policy.

@bionicmanc I'm not sure how new that limit is but is quite possible that it's one of the consequences of Brexit, it may have just taken a while to kick in.

Yup - see my post marked as the answer - it's only just been introduced under a tariff change so I suspect that's not viewed a contractual term change.

Re: 25GB roaming restriction

I don't see any notification of this change. This is potentially a nightmare for bill payers (most probably parents!) who don't know. If I used 225GB (similar to last year) that would cost me £500 in addition to the £2 per day for the privilege!!!

No, I suspect a change of tariff doesn't require a notification as it's not a contractual change.  I guess it's in line with other providers who also have a similiar limit.

I believe they've introduced a text warning when the limit is reached (or close to).

Presumably the mathematics of Sky purchasing effectively unlimited data volume transit across foreign cellular networks at normal UK subscription rates plus £2 a day wasn't working for them...

Yeah I know...wasn't being wholly serious. I'll put this in the "Another Brexit Benefit" folder.
