Re: SkyGo Crashing on Start-up - Windows 11
Hi, Windows 11 user here (for my sins)
I found the folders C:\Users\"YOURNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Sky and C:\Users\"YOURNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Sky Go
I right clicked on them selected properites and made sure the "Read Only" box was completley unticked.
Then I found "C:\Users\"YOURNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Sky\Sky Go\Sky Go.exe and right clicked on it, clicked properties and under compatibility ticked the "Register this programme for a restart"
My hypothesis is that some files that need to be updated have been marked as read only and therefore unable to update. After updating the sky go app launches into a black screen and does nothing - the register for restart seems to cure this.
One thing to note, even after unticking the read only box on the folders its still has a blue box when you try the properties again but I've gone into the folders and highlighted everything and tried properties and confirmed everything is unticked for read only.
Running the app as an adminstrator breaks the app. Perhaps they are worried that having elevated privales will open it up to some kind of modding- ie record programmes etc.
Hope this helps someone, what a pain it is lol.

Re: SkyGo Crashing on Start-up - Windows 11
Did all this, it didn't change anything. I installed the app, deleted all these folders and reinstalled it It makes no difference.
This software is remarkably poor, there is no documentation to say what the error messages mean, and Sky doesn't support it in any meaningful way. Very shortly, I'll be ending my Sky contract, and if lots of people did that, it would be exactly what this remarkably arrogant company deserves.

Hmm, sorry it didn't work. I do have my user account control set to "never notify" maybe that helps it. I'll uninstall the app and go through the steps again to see if I've missed anything 🙂

Re: SkyGo Crashing on Start-up - Windows 11
Yup, after installing, making it work uninstalling (with Revo uninstaller to clear out any remnants) and breaking it multiple times. I've come to the conclusion that it's an IP Address block (not using sky internet), running a VPN whilst installing it went to check for updates, installed them, click on the cookies and then straight into asking me to log in without having to do any tick boxes etc. I think by trying various things and therefore trying multiple times you can get lucky and get the sky servers to allow you to connect. The same thing happens when downloading shows on the Q box, it'll fail 5 times and then succeed on the 6th etc. Sky really should sort out their IP blocking but I doubt they will because then a lot of people will leave their ISP in search of faster speeds and cheaper prices!

Re: SkyGo Crashing on Start-up - Windows 11
Wow, running a virtual windows to run an app seems pretty extreme. I get it if you're running Linux or something but wth running a virtual windows under windows.
I'm up and running natively and I have hyper v disabled in BIOS. I had to change my IP to an address in Edinburgh to download the update to make SkyGo work. My home IP is blocked by sky 90% of the time

Re: SkyGo Crashing on Start-up - Windows 11
In fact you dont run the app in a virtual window, you just enable the possibility. The virtual window is used normally for development or education purposes.
If you are VPN to Edinburgh I'm guessing you are outside the UK so geolocation blocking might be a factor.
Working "natively" can work ok if you run Windows 11 Pro and migrate from 23H2 to 24H2

Re: SkyGo Crashing on Start-up - Windows 11
I'm in UK, just sky blocks my IP most of the time, so I can't update the app. I can get it to update without using a VPN, it just takes a lot of repeated attempts, using a VPN and I'll update on first attempt.

Re: SkyGo Crashing on Start-up - Windows 11
After years of reading these threads and trying to get it to work. I've just managed to get it working.
1. I removed the app Ccleaner (not sure if this was needed)
2. I downloaded the latest app from the Sky Website
3. I opened Windows Defender with Advanced Security
4. Went to Outbound Rules
5. Created a new rule for Program - <Path to SkyGo App> - Allow the Connection - have all three options ticked - give it a name and Exit.
6. Run SkyGo app as Admin
Boom and it worked!
