I subscribe to sky go and have a sky sports package. I thought this would include me being able to watch on my iPad when I'm out at a clinic for much of the week but it says I need to upgrade my subscription to watch this in sky go. I have that subscription though so why won't it allow me to watch it? Thanks so much.

As you left Sky and then returned after being away for 18 months or more then your account will have been closed so you will need to set up a new Sky ID to use.
If you want to use the same email address then you need to first remove it from the old account first so log into the old account here:
https://www.sky.com/myaccount/my-details
Then delete the email address by providing another one and logout of this account, this will then free it up to use when setting up your new Sky ID:
https://www.sky.com/help/diagnostics/sky-id/sky-id
Now login with your new Sky ID.

This doesn't make sense. I have an account with a sky id. A new one. What difference would this make? I already set up a new account?

As this isn't the case to see if they can help you with this I have escalated your post to the Sky Messaging team who should be in touch with you regarding this via a blue/red chat bubble which will appear at the bottom of this page. It can take up to a few hours to be contacted via this.
This link explains how this works so you will need to respond to the chat bubble at the bottom of the page when it appears:

When the chat bubble does appear you will have 48 hours to respond or it will be automatically closed.
This isn't a live chat so replies are not instant.

my question was why can't I watch sky sports on my iPad away from home?
Not that I'm having trouble setting up an account. I never continued using my old account. I set up a completely new one. I just want an answer about why I can watch other channels but not sky sports on my iPad when I can watch everything on my tv and sky cube???
sorry if I'm missing something here but I am only having trouble with sky sports.

It appears you have missed the chat invite you have been sent so you need to engage with that where someone will try to help you with this.
