For the past couple of weeks I've lost the ability to download programmes to the app. I get an error message stating that "your device needs authorisation, please ensure it's connected to the internet and try again". Other to players work with no issues. I've tried uninstalling but nothing works.
It also won't let me watch on demand either, so basically the app is not fit for purpose.

I do have but switching it off isn't the issue. I no longer have the Recorded icon at the bottom. Also if you press the remote icon at the top it states no box connected.
It just stopped working so I reinstalled and still doesn't work.
The app works fine on my Android phone

So did you have a VPN and have now turned it off ?
