A possibility a New Sky Glass model will be announced in February at a Sky launch event which is described as 'See what's next," , "Smarter, brighter, and better than ever."

Would certainly explain why they've been running existing stock down over the last few months. You'd be mighty annoyed to have recently paid full price for soon-to-be discontinued Glass hardware though.

It's frankly remarkable that the v1 Glass is still retailed (at full price) more than three years after launch: I don't think there's any other television set where that's happened

'Set top boxes' tend to have a rather longer release span than televisions, and maintaining different versions, particularly for loaned hardware, would be a significant logistics complication.

@Jason+Golding  Discussed in great detail, within the thread your post has been merged to in the Sky Glass forum.

Stream isn't affected by this as mentioned by @TimmyBGood

Does anyone else remember the Sky Glass launch event where they mentioned we'd be able to upgrade to new versions easily (in the same way phones/iPhones offer upgrade options) – they definitely mentioned this but I've never heard anything else about it and don't see anything in any of my Sky Glass/finance agreements.

I hope if there is a new version they will make upgrading easy.

It wasn't upgrading specification at point of sale though: it was an equivalent to the 'Swap 24' model of cellular hardware contract.

My suspicion is that was always something of a mistake for Glass: aside from financial viability, the actual logistics involved are very different simply given the physical dimensions of a Glass television compared to a smartphone.

Of course it also requires a new model release at least every two years...

The other issue with 'easy upgrading' is it's fundamentally opposed to stated Sky claims about environmental sustainability: a television set really should be in use for more than 24 months. Trading in for residual value (which is realistically negligible) in order to get something shinier is problematic enough for phones.

Re: Will there be a Sky Glass 2?

You will not be able to 'swop' your old glass tv for a new one like you do with mobile.

Re: Will there be a Sky Glass 2?

Will be interested to see what a revised version of Glass might be. Our 43" in the bedroom is still in regular use and still manages to impress on occasion given its price point (Superman II in 4K HDR yesterday a case in point). Unlikely to replace ours unless it fails, but moving to a micro-LED display would help on the HDR, overall peak brightness and hopefully motion handling side.

With regards the original Glass announcement saying 'Glass will be upgradable as per a smartphone', I've increasingly come to understand this as the OS updating to include bug fixes, new features and performance enhancements as opposed to a periodic hardware upgrade that customers can trade-in against. Given the hardware limitations that are fixed, the brighter display enhancements, new OS features and UI improvements (hello Dolby Atmos badges for Sky's own content), Glass has been really well supported, especially when compared to most manufacturers - understandable given that Sky have a financial interest in supporting the set post purchase unlike everyone else.

Will see what February brings.

A 'swap' system 'just like your mobile phone ' was specifically highlighted during the launch event in October 2021 (right after the bit on regular software updates and enhancements)

To be fair, this did seem ambitious, and it was always odd that there was no mention of it in the T&Cs or finance contract.

Re: Will there be a Sky Glass 2?

Swap system..

I'd wager that was before Sky was sold to Comcast.

I imagine terms and conditions 'don't' apply..
