The IT Crowd on E4

Is this where everyone gets their help advise from on this sub.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Some of us have done the jobs depicted in that series for decades; )

Given that Glass is a specialised network computing device and absolutely not a 'television set', rebooting the operating system remains extremely valid advice as the first step in any troubleshooting.

But it needs to be for a few minutes ... there was a superuser who kept suggesting 30 secs was enough😂🤣😂

I tend to suggest at least a pause before replugging: that goes back to experiencing users killing the power supply in 386/486 era PCs by 'flickering' a hardware rocker switch. If you can actually hear it sparking, that's probably a bad sign ; )

The next significant time period is 'at least an hour', which is based on default 3600 second TTL in network address allocations.

'A few minutes' is probably based on theories about capacitors discharging which I'm not sure are valid in any current equipment.  It might even relate to valve cooling in truly antique hardware.

Ah I remember the good old days of BNC network cabling

if a cable accidentally got pulled out of the wall outlet we had to turn every pc and server off and back on in order

I inherited a building full of 10BASE2 in an early role: the senior IT guy insisted all the ISA cards, co-ax rolls, taps and terminators were carefully stored away  on transitioning to 10BASE-T because 'you never know when you'll need them again'

Mind you, there was an appreciable weight of gold in those cards: they are probably worth more now than when they were built ; )
