Tearing apart Sky Glass…

...no, not me telling you it is rubbish, but I came across this video of a guy taking apart a 65" Sky Glass that was brought into his workshop due to a damaged screen.

The video isn't going to win a BAFTA, but If you are interested in what the internals look like, it starts around 90 seconds in:

@stereohaven interesting find but I am confused why there is any mystery about who builds the sets given Sky announced TP Vision as their partners at the launch. The size of the speakers is also pretty normal what is unclear is the quality but given most TV have speakers which cost literally pence its not going to take much to be better.

No mystery to us because it was discussed here at launch, but clearly it was the first time this guy had come across this type of set. 

I thought the big sticker with "TPV" on it was a great clue... 😂

I think the quality (or lack thereof), is clear to anyone that has heard Sky Glass at a decent volume. You don't need to take the back off to understand the limitations of the design choices.

I know it isn't going to happen, but it would be interesting (to me), to see what Sky Glass would have sounded like if they used a crossover and shifted some frequencies to a bluetooth linked standalone sub.

I just wish the Sky advertising had been less overblown on the subject: I guess 'a bit better than average' wasn't as appealing to an ad agency as 'sonic boomio'.

Excellent find @stereohaven - I'd give that a BAFTA for the dramatic power cut scenes alone!  "Alright guys & gals on YouTube..." - hilarious. 

No wonder people complain about the lack of Atmos effect from those teeny tiny upward firing speakers. They must cost all of 5p each. It's bonkers that Sky are charging over a grand for that thing.

Given the width of the enclosure (chunky though it is) that was always going to be a limitation: Atmos capable soundbars are typically considerably wider.

You'd be surprised what someone like Bose (even these can be flawed) can pack in to a tiny speaker, hell even my Anker soundcore is impressive.

True you can get good quality small things but i don't think anyone is arguing Sky got them for there TVs

They just put six in it.

Average TV has like 2.

So it was always going to sound better. 

I know TPV inside out and they always come good in the end with software updates, but by golly it's an infuriating way to sell a product by fiekd testing it on the general public first.

Sky, Comcast whatever have got their hands full make no mistake.

The TV is due a refresh at this point most TV manufacturers do one every year every two years has become quite rare.

Don't get too hung up on the size of the speakers. Remember that these are really tweeters that give the sound direction.

I doubt that there is anything in the pipeline but fingers crossed as I'm sure technology has moved on since Glass was developed.  I seem to recall that when Glass was first launched there was talk of a trade-in system similar to Apple's trade in programme.  That would be good 😀
