Looking for a bit of advice :-)

I currently have a 2018 Sony Bravia KD-55XE and it annoys me that it won't support full 4K from my Apple TV. Other than that its all good.

I'm looking at the Sky Glass Air 55" and wondered if the picture quality would be similar or better. I have a Sonos soundbar so not bothered about the Air's sound quality.

any assistance would be much appreciated.

Pete

@Pete+offaLeeds The thing with Air is that because of how it sits on the stand you may not be able to place the soundbar in front of it without it blocking the screen.

Picture quality is very good on the Glass but there are other Smart TV's that might be a better option for you.

If you have a fairly slim soundbar, it will be fine, but if you have quite a chunky soundbar, and are not wall-mounting it, then it's possible the soundbar will block the bottom of the TV. Obviously, that all depends on the viewing angle you will have.

There are tv cabinets / stands you can buy with a soundbar shelf ........

Hi Gavin, it would be wall mounted so the sound bar isn't an issue it was just an opinion on the oicture quality i was after ☺️

@Pete+offaLeeds Fair enough. I forget some people like to live dangerously!

Of course, if you went for a Glass Gen Two you could do away with the soundbar entirely! If it's your main TV I think Glass is the better option but Air seems worth considering for a second TV.

What do you mean by "full 4K from your Apple TV"? Your TV is a 4K model so it will accept 4K from the Apple TV. It may not have all the flavours of HDR which an Apple TV 4K box can output but it's still a very capable TV. What is the exact model number of your TV?

It would be worthwhile getting a demo of Glass Air to see how the picture quality measures up to your eyes. Whilst the Glass Air has more HDR capability, it only has global dimming, whereas many sets in the Sony XE range have local dimming which will give you better blacks.

It's worthwhile shopping around, especially if you want flexibility. Glass Air is perfect as a second bedroom TV but perhaps not as a main TV. You can get similarly priced 4K LCD TV's with better backlighting, higher refresh rates, more HDR formats and more built-in apps from other manufacturers. You can then connect a Sky Stream puck to them for maximum flexibility and the same Sky Streaming experience that you'd get on a Glass Air TV.

The other appeal of Glass Air is the finance option of course - you can get one for a relatively low monthly charge, interest free, so that's a big positive for many customers. If that's an important factor for you then it's definitely worth considering, but do try and have a look at one first at a Sky shop in your nearest shopping mall or in Currys.

That tv should support 4K Apple TV no problem. Have you got your tv settings set up correctly? @Pete+offaLeeds

Re: Looking for a bit of advice :-)

Hi, thanks for that excellent advice. The exact model is KD- 55XE8586. The Apple TV won't set for 4k HDR 60Hz on the TV, only 4k SDR 50Hz. Don't know if that makes much difference?

Do you have match dynamic range and match frame rate turned on in the Apple TV Video settings? If you keep the video output to 4K SDR 50Hz, then it should automatically switch the output to the appropriate frame rate and dynamic range for the content. That's what I do with my Apple TV 4K box and Panasonic OLED and it works a treat.

Your model of TV doesn't have Dolby Vision but will accept HLG and HDR10. Apps such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV+ will output HDR10 at the appropriate frame rates to your TV. Make sure you use a high speed HDMI cable and run the HDMI check tool from the video settings menu to make sure it's capable.
