Ad Skipping. What is it?

I thought I was quite good with tech, but having paid for this for a year, I have never used it, as I don't know how. 
How does 'Ad Skipping' work? Does it work on live television, or does it just work with streaming? If it only works with streaming, what streaming services does it work with, as again, I have never seen evidence of it in action.

Allows you to fast forward ads on itvx my5 4 on demand  and various streaming services by U

 

allows you to skip ads totally on sky on demand shows 

 

doesn't allow fast forwarding on live tv channels unless you have paused for a while 

 

doesn't allow fast forwarding in the subscription apps like prime Disney Netflix paramount etc
