4K Player - Possible HDR issue

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone can help with an issue I'm having with my Xbox Series S and Sky Glass that's just started occuring.  I have just been given a work around on the Xbox, however I'm coming here incase there's something I can do on my Sky Glass settings to fix this.

On Saturday just gone I went to play Dark Knight (4K) on my machine and as soon as it got past the spinning disc icon, the screen went green and the WB logo appeared in numerous different colours.  I restarted the machine and tried to play it again, the same problem.  Checking the disc for any damage and there wasn't any, so I decided to try another 4K, wanting to eliminate the disc from the problem.  Exactly the same problem on the second disc.

So I jumped online and the closest solution, to a green screen occurring, related to a faulty HDMI cable.  This was a brand new 4K cable, but I knew that didn't really mean anything in the world of technology, so bought another and that's just arrived.  Plugging that in this morning and the same thing is happening.  Absolutely no issues with picture quality, until the disc starts then, the screen goes green and the film is in all sorts of colours.

Returning to the Xbox home screen everything returns to normal for the machine.  Until I return to the 4k disc.

Now I posted this on the Xbox one Reddit just and kindly a Reddit User directed me to turning off HDR on the Xbox settings.  So I turned off HDR10 and the discs started playing correctly.

However, the starting the disc informs you that you should really have HDR on playing discs.

What is extra strange is you can, once the film has started, go into the settings on the Xbox and turn on the HDR10.  The disc plays without issue.  Though if you restart it, the issue returns.

So now I'm looking at my Sky Glass HDR settings.  Is there anything here I'm wondering thats been recently updated, or that I should be altering to stop this from happening?

This hasn't occured at all before.  I'm at a total loss why it is.  However, I want to fix it, so if anyone can help me with the Sky Glass settings that would be brilliant thank you.

Is the new cable HDMI 2.1 certified?

Just moved my Xbox Series X from the downstairs TV to the Glass TV upstairs. Xbox dashboard renders fine. Insert Blade Runner 4K disc, BluRay app opens with blue splash screen - then immediately goes to green. Disc menus all green, film plays back in pink &  green shades.

I did get the disc to play back properly with 24p turned off in Settings > general > Display > video settings > video modes.

WIll take a proper look at what is going on later this evening, but I could reproduce the problem. Not sure if 24p was the problem or not, or whether making any old change to the display options causes the disc playback to correct itself. More later.

Correction: Having played around a bit more XSX & Glass, I'm thoroughly baffled.

Trying a 4K HDR10 disc (Blade Runner) and I get the green screen. Switch to settings and toggle HDR10, Auto HDR or 24p off and then on again, when I switch back to the BluRay player app, the film appears ok* with no green or pink blocks. The picture does however look washed out, so the orange flames that appear over the opening shot of the city scape look anemic. Even once the settings give a ok looking picture, one reboot and the BluRay app goes back to green and pink. Xbox dashboard menus and games all look fine though, so the issue looks to be confined to the BluRay app.

Switching to the same iTunes purchased film on my Apple TV 4K, which is in Dolby Vision and the same shot looks much better, with deep, vivid oranges.

Went back to the Xbox with a Dolby Vision encoded disc (Liongate's 1978 Halloween) and I get the same result as the HDR10 disc.

Although I usually use a dedicated Sony 4K player for watching discs downstairs on the Sony TV/Denon AVR, I did used to use the Xbox for 4K discs and it worked just fine. The issue looks to be how the XBox is handling and outputting HDR (HDR10 & Dolby Vision) disc content to the Glass TV.

I've brought the Sony X800M2 4K player upstairs and both HDR10 & Dolby Vision playback is flawless.

Given the Xbox's own dashboard and games look to play back in HD10 & Dolby Vision just fine on Glass, I'm tempted to point the finger at the BluRay app on Xbox. How this should be resolved and is the issue Xbox side, Glass side or a combination of both is anyone's guess.

Re: 4K Player - Possible HDR issue

I've raised this with Xbox Support, they've asked me to Soft Reset my machine to see if this fixes it.  If not to get back in touch.

The also asked to check if my machine was up to date (it is), also if the TV can play both HDR and Dolby Vision (Glass obviously can).  I've had zero problems before, it's definitely an Xbox update that's knackered the app.

I can't see this being Sky Glass, otherwise the Xbox dashboard would be all over the place.  I am right in thinking that, yes?

My hdmi is definitely 4k suitable, it's apparently - according to the blurb - 8k suitable though I'll never see that.

I'm going to Soft Reset it (Xbox) in the morning, I'll update here tomorrow.

You're right. The dashboard & video games in HDR10/Dolby Vision all work as expected this end, so I'm assuming our cables are good and that Glass is ok handling HDR dashboard & gaming content from our Xboxes. The issue is when using the BluRay player app to play any HDR disc content on the Xbox; the same discs played back via a dedicated 4K disc player work just fine (again with the same cable as was used with the Xbox)

Re: 4K Player - Possible HDR issue

Right I've uninstalled and reinstalled in Blu-ray app - Didn't fix
Soft Reset the machine - Did't fix
Hard Reset the machine - Didn't fix
Checked my Sky Glass settings - Didn't fix

I've sent a longgggg message back to Xbox Support highlighting another user has an issue and steps I've now taken.  Hopefully, this will be fixed soon.  A recent software update has clearly knackered something somewhere.  I just want them to unknacker it!

Fast fixes are dependent impact.... how many Sony Customers are reporting the issue😉

Have you started a campaign on the Sony Customer Forum to have the issue addressed?
