2nd Hand Sky Glass Gen 1

Hello,

I have purchased a 2nd hand sky glass and have factory reset it. I want to activate it so I can use the built in apps rather then using a fire stick all the time. From what I understand you should be able to get the free apps without a sky subscription? I called sky and they have told me I need to buy a subscription then cancel it to activate the TV.

Any one have the same issue ?

Thanks

@Tom_F12

I gifted my daughter my gen 1 55 inch glass and we had to call in to sky and add the least expensive essentials package to activate the tv.

once active (within seconds) you then have the option to cancel the package but retain your sky account

it is important to note that you mustn't then factory reset the tv once you have unsubscribed

@Tom_F12  I don't believe it can be activated without a subscription but I have asked the question in a closed forum for clarification

That's probably correct, because app access requires a Sky account (although not a Sky subscription)

Coincidentally, it also means they can then offer you deals on a full package without falling foul of the relevant legislation....

Yeah, you're best bet is to sign up for Essential TV on a 31 day rolling contract for a month. This will allow you to activate the Glass TV and set up an active SkyID. You can then immediately cancel Essential TV and once it expires the live channel streams via the EPG will stop but the TV's apps will remain useable.

The apps are essentially behind a paywall. To access them, the Glass must be logged into an account. Whether the account is active or inactive, it must have been logged in before the account was cancelled. The Glass can be added to an active account and then logged into that. Without this, you will only have access to the tuner and HDMI. After a factory reset, the previous owner's credentials will be logged out and you are now behind the paywall.

Cheers

Kenny
