Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
Perhaps if the programme suppliers realised that dialogue is more important than music it may help.

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
Or recognised that most viewing is still on devices with L/R audio only (in the case of the vast majority of televisions via tiny rear-facing drivers) rather than mixing for 5.1 separates by default.

Totally agree I can watch old films on Talking Pictures for example without subtitles but modern 5.1 sound defeats me. I wish I could buy a speaker system that emphasised voice

My TV (Sony) has a voice zoom setting but it does not seem to make any difference.

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
I guess the nicest thing you can say about the state of UHD for deaf/hard of hearing folks is that you get Netflix premium on discount. I'm sure if Sky could somehow remove subtitles from the bundled Netflix on 4k material, they would. Never tried Netflix on the Q-box, though, maybe they *do* remove them? I should check..
Depends on your discounts of course but ultimate tv is max £6 and UHD max £4 so you get £3.99 off on Netflix UHD subscription..

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
There's kind of workaround for this. No thanks to Sky of course.
If you've got an Android tablet, you have two options. First, you can try "Live transcribe", which uses AI to do speech recognition to generate subtitles. It kind of works like CC on BBC, which is typed by someone live so it's a little bit behind what's being said. However, it's hardly perfect so the subtitles can be a bit zen at times. Works hands free at least, what you hear is (kind of) what you get.
The second option is "Subtitle Viewer", which downloads premade subtitles (from opensubtitles.org). These are similar to actual program subtitles so there's no problem understanding them. You can also go get your own subtitle files from e.g. addicted to subtitles if the automatic pick is not what you want. The problem here is that you have to tap on a subtitle line to get the playback going so you should hear at least well enough to time that. And it gets out of sync on ad breaks, even if it's just the program title screen without ads. So you have to get out of the couch regularly to get the subtitles back on track. In worst case the subtitle file is for US TV, which will slowly drift out of sync with the British TV since there's a bit of a difference in the speed.
So two choices there, one works automatically but can be a bit mystifying to follow. The other has (potentially) good quality subtitles but requires hands-on work to do it's thing.
For Apple users there's "Otter", which is similar to the "Live Transcript" but it's aimed more at automatically transcribing meetings or e.g. presentations. Also costs money but you get enough free minutes a month to decide if it's worth the cost or not.
Now the perfect solution is of course for Sky to flip the switch and include subtitles on UHD? Any year now? Before 2030?

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
If Sky's UHD content was missing sound, it would have been fixed long ago. Shows you where us deaf people sit in their list of priorities. I resent that I'm paying the same as hearing people, and only receiving half the service.

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
I'm sure Sky will add subtitles for UHD content soon. All for a low, low fee of an additional £5 per month. There's always a potential revunue stream from deaf people with eye balls!

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
Since "Sky have been working on this" we've landed a robot on Mars, that has a helicopter on board, ready for fly around an alien planet. Which will, eventually, collect samples from an Alien planet and return them safely to our own.
We have also created a vaccine to a virus that has brought the entire globe to a standstill and implemented numerous lockdowns.
But it's good to know Sky are "Working on it" when it comes to adding some words to a screen for TV shows and movies in "UHD"

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
Latest absolute shambles from Sky and subtitles - Dexter.
Thanks for skipping every other line of subtitles so I can only guess the next line. My favourite game to play. Somehow much worse than having no subtitles. Bravo.
Absolutely pathetic.

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
Hi all. Appreciate the frustration, and would like to give you an update.
Subtitles on UHD is a project which we are undertaking, but the work is directly related to some other technical upgrades on our platform which needs to be completed before we can implement this. We will keep you updated when we've more news.
Many thanks

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
Hi there @EmPleh
Sorry that you're having issues with subtitles on Dexter. We'd like to investigate and fix this asap.
Can you please let me know was this on the live broadcast (/a recording from the live broadcast) or on demand? What series and episode was it? If on demand, what device (i.e. Sky+ box, sky Q box or Sky Go on another device?)
Many thanks

Re: Subtitles on UHD Sky Q?
Hi @DaveAccess
It was not a live showing, it is on demand with SkyQ and has been on every episode of Dexter watched so far, currently on season 4 ep 4 and has been on everyone so far.
Thanks for taking the time to update and look into this. I appreciate it is not always an easy job facing the breying public, so thanks for stepping up.
