I recently had an issue with my home broadband that I couldn't resolve myself, and so thought about trying this community.
I was already signed into sky.com after trying to go through their troubleshooting steps and (unhelpful) virtual assistant. I came to this page in a new tab on the same browser and clicked Sign In (top right). I was asked if my e-mail address and name was correct, and that was it - I was signed in using the same sky.com account automatcially - perfect I thought ... until I posted something and received a couple of e-mails.
I have absolutely no idea where the username came from. I wasn't asked to enter it during the sign in steps, as it implied that the same details were coming from my official sky.com account (of which this "username" isn't listed anywhere).
I've noticed a couple of posts called "username", but neither seemed to answer the question or provide any useful advice. Fortunately my username here is not my password (as suggested on one post) but neither is it the username I enter when logging on. Closing the account is a bit dramatic giving that I have just posted something and enjoy browsing the forum.
It seems that there is definitely something wrong with that signup process and the relationship between the sky community account and the sky.com account.
For the record, I've opened a completely different browser, came to this forum, clicked Sign In, entered my (correct) Sky username and password into the skyid.sky.com URL and got logged in successfully, so the issue is not with the username but the fictional display username on this forum.
As someone who works in IT (and not in a call centre), I am stunned to read that the username cannot be updated on a database somewhere, and surely it forms a breach of security for those who have reported issues with their password being represented in their username, not to mention sloppy coding in the sign up / sign in / SSO process.
I appreciate the other articles I spotted say that there is nothing that can be done, but I'm curious to know if this has this been escalated anywhere within Sky and their website development team?
Will closing the account remove any existing posts that have been created?
And will it also remove any record of the account existing?
I read in one of those posts that a different e-mail address would need to be used to sign-up here again, which also seems weird.
