As the only daughter of King Viserys I and Alicent Hightower, Helaena was often cast aside by her siblings. Heleana is in her own world and is concerned with matters that others around her do not care for. While she is surrounded by political arguments and familial spats, Heleana focuses on her own interests.
She is known, and often judged, for speaking in peculiar language and showing her interest in insects, studying them regularly. Along with her fascination with the tiny animals, Heleana often tries to spark intellectual insights and philosophical conversations, a feat that would ultimately fail when it came to discussing such matters with her family.
Her brothers, Aegon II and Aemond, often voiced that they find her peculiar nature unsettling. This split with her brothers only worsened as their louder and more dominant personalities overshadowed hers.
Despite their differences, Helaena and Aegon II were married, a union that would keep the Targaryen bloodline pure. This arrangement secured her position as future Queen in consort, once Aegon II was sworn into the Iron Throne; a strategic move that would help to legitimise Aegon’s reign during the Dance of the Dragons.

Heleana and Aegon produced two children, Jaeharea and Jaehaerys, who would now stand by King Aegon II as the battle for the Iron Throne commences. After her brother, Aemond, killed their cousin, Lucerys, the war between the Green and Blacks is set to begin, with Helaena as Queen and now a leader of the Greens.
