No, you get to keep it as long as you continue to login to your account via the Sky website here on a regular basis like once a month:

Ah thanks for that. The customer services person I spoke to said I'd lose it once I cancelled but to be fair she didn't sound like she had a clue what she was talking about.

Yes, what you were told is incorrect as long as you login to it on a regular basis.
