How do you block unwanted email messages from betting and dating sites?

I have had a long time problem with receiving emails with my sky (Yahoo) address.  I have had thousands of messages from various betting sites.  I have tried blocking those sites, but it clearly doesn't work.  I have never bet and never will.

I am recent bereaved and tried a dating site.  As soon as I did this, loads of sites that I have not contacted were sending me what I could only describe as pornographic.  I have never contacted them and wrote to them to unsubscribe, but that is ignored. How do I get rid of these unwanted messages?

@Zimmer2 never unsubscribe to unwanted emails. It just confirms to an unscrupulous scammer that your email account is active and it's worth them continuing. 

There's no point blocking emails from particular email addresses. A scammer will just set up another one. The best way of dealing with them is to mark them as spam, and eventually the 'system' will learn to move them to your spam folder.

Emails of the type you describe are very common, I get dozens every day, but the spam filter works well and they never reach my inbox.
