Meet the community Oracles: Mark39

Community Manager

Welcome to the latest in our series of blogs putting the spotlight on each of our Oracles.

You may or may not know but they are not Sky employees they are customers just like you and dedicate an incredible amount of their own time helping other customers.

What makes them tick and how did they get so involved in the Sky Community in the first place? I got the chance to ask these questions and others. Read on for the low down.

Meet @Mark39 - he's currently into DIY solar energy.

“I originally signed up to the community looking for help with a SkyID problem and found I knew the answers to some of the questions being asked. It kind of snowballed from there...”

When did you join the Sky Community?

“November 2010.”

How long have you been an Oracle?

“Since June 2012.”

Apart from being an Oracle, have you had any other roles within the community?

“Early triallist of the 'Enhanced EPG' in 2012 (don't remember much about it now!), regular triallist for Sky+HD and now Sky Q, including Buy & Keep. Green Room member since inception, and also its smaller predecessor.”

What about you “in real life” What are your hobbies, interests, career history?

“I was a Computer, process and systems auditor by profession now retired. I love any technical gadgetry and, in the past, have built my own computers and various electronic projects many of which are still in day to day use. Currently into DIY solar energy.”

How did you originally find us?

“I originally signed up to the community looking for help with a SkyID problem and found I knew the answers to some of the questions being asked. It kind of snowballed from there...”

How do you think the community helps Sky customers?

“It avoids the need to contact Sky for assistance and can provide help on peripheral issues indirectly related to Sky products.”

How would you describe the community to a new user?

“It’s a friendly place where other Sky customers go out of their way to help.”

What would be your top tip or tips for a new user on the forum?

“Tell us in detail about the problem you want help with. Give us some background information, and what you’ve already tried. Noting is more annoying than explaining what to do next only to be told I’ve already done that.”

Do you have any tips for a member who would like to become an Oracle?

“Be friendly. Post regularly. Don't get embroiled in arguments. Use the 'this is how to complain' response sparingly.”

What are your favourite areas and has this changed over time?

“Sky+, Fibre, Broadband, Talk, Entertainment, Remotes & accessories. Always has been.”

How do you balance your real life with your second life as an oracle?

“I’m retired so it’s easy! Just fit in visits to the forum between other activities. I’m more of a lark than a night owl.”

What are your most memorable moments?

“Trialling I think. Always a buzz to be involved in something new before it’s rolled out.”

Thanks for reading. Check back soon for another insight into the Sky Oracles.

If you've got a problem with your Sky that needs to be fixed or you just fancy using your expertise to help others... why not pick a category and get stuck in?
