some websites are redirect to italian language versions

I am getting some kind of redirects to Italian versions of websites

eg

when attempting to visit quora.com

I get redirected to it.quora.com

This is happening on the following devices

  • 2x windows 10 laptops
  • windows 10 desktop
  • ubuntu 20.04 LTS desktop
  • raspberry pi running rasbian
  • Android mobile (connected to wifi) but not when using mobile data

I have used the following browsers,

  • chrome - with and without extensions
  • opera - no extensions installed
  • chromium - no extensions installed
  • edge - no extensions websites

I have typed the URL into the browsers directly and also by using search engines

No HOSTS files have been modified

There is no proxy set

my IP address shows me as been in the UK

The devices have not left the UK

device and browser languages and regions are all set to English

using opera browser which has a built-in VPN, as expected the websites do not redirect

so far this has happened on

quora.com

terrasmaster.com

Only noticed today no idea how long it's been going on. Any suggestions on what's going on, or what if anything I can do to correct this?

Re: some websites are redirect to italian language versions

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

@royjone When you connect to the internet Sky assign the connection a public IP4 address there is a world shortage of these so Sky transferred some spare ones from their Italian company to the UK. It takes a while for the internet to catch up thst these addresses are now used in the UK hence why you are having issues. Changing browsers etc wont help as the site draws its geographic info from a third party server.

Easiest work round is to power down your hub for a few minutes then restart it and the odds are you will be assigned an address which maps to the UK. Not sure what if anything Sky can do to sort this issue but it has been around now for seceral months and I have seen nothing from them.

Re: some websites are redirect to italian language versions

thanks, I did this today and worked ...for about 10 minutes. today I can not access my Gmail account or bank. I have noticed another post about it on this forum. using my phone as a hotspot is the best work around for me
