how do you turn off broadband without affecting the whole house?

The Sky product for that is now WiFi Max

The DIY approach is to connect a separate Wireless Access Point (not a router) over ethernet to the Sky Hub, give the kids the password for that, change the password on the Hub and then switch the AP off as desired.
