Re: new BB customer with PC that doesn't have Wifi

After 2 engineer visits, I appear to have Internet and phone connectivity. The problem now is the Sky hub is plugged into an ADSL connection on the (new) master phone socket installed by the last engineer to visit, meaning the hub has to be close to the master phone socket (as the ADSL cable supplied by Sky is only a metre or two long).

The computer I need to connect to the Sky hub with a network cable (as I've no WiFi) is in another room so I wanted to try to get an ADSL cable long enough (eg 15m) to reach from the master phone socket to the room with the computer, so the Sky hub can sit next to the computer.

Is there any point in trying to get Sky to supply me with such an ADSL cable or will I have to buy one? If I have to buy one, do I need any 15m ADSL cable with RJ11 connectors on either end? I'm a bit concerned that the cable supplied by Sky appears to have different connectors on each end and it must be connected the right way round (with white connector in the phone socket and purple connector in the Sky hub). Can anybody advise?

@Disconnected_cu you can buy DSL cables with rj11 connecters at most hardware stores while 15m is longer than you ideally want as longer cables can reduce speeds they should be available .if however the only reason for the longer cable is to connect to the PC consider buying a longer ethernet cable which can be up to 100m without affecting speeds

You will confuse people if you continue to call your connection ADSL which is largely superceeded your service uses VDSL2 a far faster.technology.

It was the Sky engineer who said it was an ADSL cable. Anyway, what about the apparent need for the Sky-supplied cable to be connected in one direction and not the other - there must be a reason for it. Do I need to replicate this if I buy a new cable?

Re: new BB customer with PC that doesn't have Wifi

Can anybody help me with the following issue?

Before the BT engineer visited my home yesterday, my master phone socket had just a phone connection. That connection always worker for phone and broadband in the past. Since switching to Sky (ie Sky Superfast service) the phone connection has been 'dead' (meaning if I connect a phone it doesn't even get any power and if I connect the Sky hub to the phone socket I don't get 'Internet' or 'Voice' lights on the Sky hub).

When the BT engineer visited yesterday he fitted a new faceplate to the master phone socket with both phone and DSL connections on it. He also had to go away during the visit to connect something at the local street telecomms cabinet. He then set up my Sky hub connected to the DSL connection on the new master phone socket and my Sky hub was working properly (all 4 lights showing on the hub). Also my phone works when plugged in to the phone connection on the Sky hub.

Now if I try connecting something to the phone connection on the master phone socket it's still the same as before - a phone gets no power and the Sky hub shows no 'Internet' or 'Voice' lights. Is it supposed to be like that? Should I be able to connect the Sky hub to the phone connection on the master phone socket and the Sky hub show all 4 lights? I wonder if there's still a problem that hasn't been dealt with yet or is the situation as it should be (with an apparently 'dead' phone connection on the master phone socket)?

All off the above is 100% correct and done as it should be........

The Phone side of the master socket is 100% dead duck forever and ever, will never work again as long as Openreach are concerned......

Really don't understand what is going on with my phone line. Has always worked for phone + broadband over more than 10 years. Then switch to Sky for phone + broadband and suddenly the phone socket seems to be 'dead'.

Then a BT engineer visits and the master phone socket now has an 'active' DLS connection and a still apparently 'dead' phone connection.

Can anybody explain what might be going on - I really do want to know????

@Disconnected_cu

Since September 2023, all broadband switching involves the end of PSTN (analogue) voice service on the 'line' to that address and a move over to 'digital voice' service.  This is part of the run-up to the end of PSTN nationally, which is currently scheduled for January 2027 (postponed from December 2025)

Once digital voice (actually VoIP) is active on the circuit, the only live 'phone' connection socket is the one on the ISP router which converts an analogue handset or DECT base to VoIP.

Thanks for the information, and apologies for the delay in replying.

So (assuming this is the first time I've switched BB provider since Sept 2023) I would have has this problem whichever broadband supplier I had switched to and was always going to need an engineer visit to my property to 'upgrade' the master phone socket when I did switch?

Re: new BB customer with PC that doesn't have Wifi

@Disconnected_cu The switch will happen to any ISP that supports a landline as some do NOT, the conventional copper line ONLY supports broadband and the landline voice side becomes defunct, there is NO need to swapout the master socket, that is more of a convience for all in operation. Old still works requires the use of a filter for the Broadband side, NEW master socket if fitted, then the RJ11 connection for the Broadband is up and live, the landline phone side is dead.....

OR decide what and what not is available, you have NO choice in the matter as soon as you decide to change, leave alone it stays as is unless there becomes a problem then you get left with NO landline until a fix or change is done!

Yes, as part of the national transition away from PSTN.

No, not necessarily.  Openreach tries to minimise personnel involvement outside of FTTP installations.
