just ordered 900mb fibre and waiting for engineer appointment

The thing is I haven't opted for the sky max add on, was told I would get a new router sent but today I received just an ethernet cable... guessing I'm not getting a new hub.

But that isn't that much of a problem. My only problem is most hubs only have the 4 yellow ports and I believe when the fibre has been installed by the engineer one of the yellow ports will be taken up by the ethernet cable that will then run to the plate on the wall.

At the moment I am using all the ports one for sky glass, one for my PC, one for an Xbox and one for a playstation.

If one of the ports is being taken up from the start what is the best/cheapest way of enabling one extra port to allow 4 connections again...as the xbox and playstation are usually only played one at a time could these be split without any loss of speed .

Sorry to ask but I'm not that great with the technical stuff, even if it is simple stuff!!!

What would I need to purchase if anyone has a cheap solution. Ot would the engineer have some type of splitter in the back of his van?

Any help would me appreciated

Thanks

Are you upgrading within sky or moving from another isp?

If within sky what hub do you have at the minute?

What you will need to buy would be an unmanaged ethernet switch probably 8 port switch

I assume your 150Mbps is via an openreach ont as opposed to a g.fast mastersocket .  Sky are starting roll out the max hub to new sky fttp customers. What does it say about any new hub in my orders in your my sky app.

New Ultrafast connections are getting a Max Hub by default, but upgrades are not.

As @cookiemonsteruk indicates, the appropriate 'splitter' would be an unmanaged gigabit ethernet switch from any brand name manufacturer.

@TimmyBGood just thinking would sky send out another ethernet cable for someone already on fttp ?

And if g.fast would the sr204 work the same as sr203 re ethernet ont to lan port 4

Re: just ordered 900mb fibre and waiting for engineer appointment

All it says in orders is an engineer visit needing rescheduling,  nothing about equipment. Because fibre wasn't available previously an open reach socket was installed to provide gfast...

If they don't send a new hub do I keep the cable from the new socket in the router and the splitter just in one of the other ports?

@cookiemonsteruk  Should not need to send out another cable or even an engineer if they already have an ONT. I changed from 150 to 500 in switching providers. All this was done remotely and just changed over routers myself.

I'm guessing I'm not getting a new hub and that is why they sent out just a single ethernet cable..

Saw som unmanaged splitters for just over a tenner on amazon

Does it say sr203 or sr204 on the back of your hub.  Does lan port 4 have wan embossed in red

Thats g.fast and the first switch from g.fast to fttp i have come across.  Again is wan embossed above lan port 4 . If so the ethernet will plug from the ont to port 4 of the sr204 just leaving you to get an unmanaged switch

Red wan on it... would the faceplate on the wall need changing by an engineer,  also think because of the change in supply they may need to do line/speed tests

@DCA50  You would not be using the faceplate as that becomes dead as you get an ONT instead with a CSP installed outside the property that connects the fibre.
