full fiber 500 but getting 100mb on wifi only?

Hi guys,

i recently upgraded to full fiber 500 few months ago. I tested my speed in the app and it is saying i am getting 500mbs speed to the hub, but my problem is i am not even getting half of the speed that i am paying for? not even one fifth of it.

i have done some reading online say that the reason could be too many deviced connected, physical obstruction or in etc. or the location of the sky router. I have try testing my wifi speed right next to the router and change the location of my router but no joy at all. still getting only 1/5 of my paid speed or less. is there something wrong with my sky hub setting? i have read that i can change the MTU but i cannot locate that setting in my admin login (192.168.0.1) i literally wnet through everywhere and cannot locate a WAN setting for this.

i have purchased a TP wifi extender and the wifi speed with that is just around 100mbs, but when i connect to the wifi network that comes off the sky hub itself is even slower. (below 100mbs more around 80mb)

i suspend that the skyhub itself is giving slow speed? i am consider getting a asus RT-AX52 a third party router would that help?

i am on a budget too hence that asus model.

thanks and any suggest would be appeaciated !

@calvin98 Have you ever managed to speed test with an Ethernet connected device to be sure that you can push the 500Mb/s speed limit, the device also has to be capable off doing it. Once established that Ethernet works, then down to looking at the hub, if locked and connected on the 2.4Ghz band you will get around the 100Mb/s mark, so you need to get locked onto the 5Ghz to get the required speed off the 500Mb/s, same again the device testing wireless has to be good enough to do it!

@calvin98 fully agree with post by @JimM1

However,  you wrote "... i am not even getting half of the speed that i am paying for..." Is this to say you are having other issues eg streaming, video meetings, etc?

If everything works OK, but it is just speed tests that have you concerned,  I wouldn't worry about it or spend money unnecessarily.

In my view, you are paying for the speed to the hub. Test that speed with an ethernet cable and computer.

WiFi will always see a speed drop compared to a wired connection.I pay for 1000/115 down/up and get close to those speeds when I check at the hub with a wired connection.

WiFi speeds can be improved but if it is reliable, strong signal and you are able to do all that you need at the moment... Why spend more money? 🤔

ps... a speed test on the phone I am typing on is 484/99

Those Wi-Fi extenders are not the best for Wi-Fi.

I appreciate not everone is prepared to spend a pile of cash on 3rd party router. I bought a refurbished TP-Link AX73 for £75  2 years ago and used it with Virgin Media..only recently sold it on ebay for £35.

But I never got full Wi-Fi all over the house. In my sons rear bedroom the PC would really struggle because it was behind his wardrobe...I got that sorted with a £20 powerline.

Yes you will get some improvement on Wi-Fi with a 3rd party router but it may not show 500Mbs in every corner. For example I have a 500Mbs connection. In my kitchen the Sky router was about 100Mbs....but with my own router now its 350Mbs but very stable.

Wi-Fi also depends on obstacle in the way such as solid brick walls and furnitures This was the router I used...not saying it will solve your problems but kept family happy for 2 years 😊

Important point...I kept the Sky router connected and connected the TP-Link to Sky router.
