frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
Hi all - this has been happening over the past few weeks and is getting worse. I have a Sky SR-203 hub connected to Openreach fibre transducer and take an ethernet connection from the hub direct to my computer (no wifi involved). Typical behaviour is no network traffic, but occassionally between 2 and 60 packets get through in a short burst, then nothing again. Applications report there is no internet connection a lot of the time.
The Sky website connection/speed test either reports it has a problem working (when I see no network traffic during the test) or that it is fine at 152Mb/s (if it is lucky enough to get some packets through). I have checked, reset etc.. everything I can.
Obviously this is not the service I signed up for. I am about to upgrade software on some servers and need a good connection. I may have to go to a library to access reliable internet.
Any suggestions for solving my intermittent connection?
Many thanks,
Keith.

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
Hi @KDFPA
Is this affecting just one ethernet connected device or all devices trying to use your broadband connection?

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
Hi James,
I have only one device connected - it is a desktop computer connected via ethernet cable to the hub. Actually there is a landline phone connected too, but I don't really use that. I see reading round that this problem of intermittent internet connection is rather common.
Thanks.
Keith.

@KDFPA What is you connection type are you on a FF Full Fibre or a FTTC G.Fast connection at the 150Mb/s speed?

Are you able to connect another device just to see if its a problem with the device or your broadband itself?

Yes, James, It is the same on a different computer (if that is what you mean).

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
@KDFPA On G.Fast you will be connected to a OR Openreach Master telephone socket and the word G.Fast should be printed on that Filtered Master Socket!.
On a FF connection you will have a seperate modem box called a ONT that turms the Fibre to an Ethernet connection and then onwards to the Ethernet port4 (WAN) connection of the sky Hub!
That is the two current methods off connection.
When you mention 150Mb/s as a speed only G.Fast and Full Fibre can get you up at that speed!

OK, thanks Jim. It is FF with the openreach fibre to wire transducer.

@KDFPA Are you able and capable of looking at the SR203 hub using the http ://192.168.0.1 web manager interface with your PC! Remove the space between the p and the :, http gets turned into https by default!

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
Thanks, Jim. I got into the hub interface and it reports connection speeds under router status (actual numbers were blocked by the forum software which thinks they are personal information).

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
@KDFPA If you are finding that it is time specific then different ball game for sure, you may have congestion on the Fibre Feed to the hub, that's a drop in speed and zero that you can do about that fact!
But with the SR203 hub i went and set the WANoE value off Auto to WANoE only, it's in advanced / wan setup if you need it!

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
@KDFPA This is an official text from OR Openreach direct below for you!
1. FTTP is a contended service, up to 32 users can be sharing the 2.5Gb backhaul, so you can never expect the full speed all the time, you may get 900mb when there are fewer people using it. I expect that you are sharing the backhaul with many users. If everyone was using it fully, you may only get 78mbs. Its called statistical multiplexing, which relies on the fact that all users are not utilising their connection fully, all of the time.
BT quote up to 900mb, so you are likely to get much less than that during peak times.
Speed tests pass very little data, so normally give a much higher speed.
2. The max OR connect to a splitter is 30 ( 32 is the splitter maximum but policy is 30 ) not every CBT port provided is likely to have a customer using it , so unless on a ‘new site’ that has no alternatives to OR FTTP the actual number on a splitter is likely to be way less , OR currently have about a 30% take up, so maybe 10 users per splitter , plus the majority don’t take 900Mb but slower profiles , and the chances of those ‘on line ‘ at any one time all and doing something intensive, rather than browsing / Netflix that may be consuming less than 30-100Mb , is slim , that’s why there is a 700Mb minimum speed guarantee on 900Mb …..the 2.4Gb will be plenty ,you would have to be incredibly unlucky to have any consistent congestion.
If you suspect PON congestion, try at a time when there won’t be much activity, late evening or early morning .
Although you have tried somethings to ‘ isolate’ the problem , the most obvious thing to do ( that you haven’t apparently tried ) is use the BT router , without doing that , you haven’t really proved anything , your third party router may great , but even great routers can be mis configured or faulty

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
@KDFPA And adding i have a FF500 feed from sky, lowest sustained to date is 200Mb/s speed when the OR network / or Sky got busy...
Nothing can be done, but covered the bases by going to that speed!

Re: frequent drop-out on Sky hub SR-203 on wired (not wifi) connection
Thanks again, Jim.
I would be happy with 200Mb download speed. The issue is with zero bits or a trickle, maybe a few kb every 20 seconds or so. I am not going to read too much into the apparent time-of-day correlation with the problem yet, though you may well be right. If it is overload of the neighbourhood OR splitter, then I guess I have to get together with OR customers nearby and lobby them (just kidding, I know that won't work). I did not switch off DSL mode yet - I doubt it's that.
I see there are quite a few cases of this sort of thing around at the moment and you are advising on several simiar posts. Thanks for that.
I will just see how it goes for a the rest of today. The last couple of hours were stable enough for me to do some work using internet.
All the best. K.
