copper phone system is being removed in my area soon

I have a copper phone line and am mid contract with SKY. Locally we have had many pnone engineers installing LOTS of fibre equipment to phone poles. They tell me Carlisle city is going to one of the first cities to totally remove the copper network.

I have had no contact from sky saying what my options are, or if i need to instigate moving to FFTP , A friend also said a modem is required and a double plug socket?

Also as it is out of my control having to change products i feel it would be unfair to have to restart a new contract! and a bigger bill no doubt

@warbo50

The pstn switch off has been delayed until 2027 at which stage sky will have moved the bulk of its customers to internet calls ie the phone is plugged into the back of the sky hub

@warbo50  You will find that what you pay will go down rather than up.

Possibly, but any such claim should be regarded with suspicion, particularly if those aren't Openreach personnel.

Probably because the above is rather exaggerated...

A friend also said a modem is required and a double plug socket?

An Optical Network Terminal (ONT) rather than a 'modem': this is provided by Openreach.  The double socket is for the ONT and the ISP router: an extension lead works just as well.

Replacement of the national copper telecoms network, which effectively dates back to the 19th century, is inevitable, but the process is heavily regulated by Ofcom.  No-one will arbitrarily remove your current connection any time soon.
