cant upgrade to superfast, openreach speed states 80Mbps

i currently have superfast 35, when i try and upgrade to superfast it says im on the fastest available.

openreach states FTTC and a speed of 80Mbps.

I have phoned and someone from technical helpline  looked into it, she said she could see i should be able to get superfast but the system doesnt let sky sell me it.

has anyone else had an issue like this and found a solution?

Re: cant upgrade to superfast, openreach speed states 80Mbps

I believe Sky no longer sell different tiers of FTTC & only have the one, fasted package now. So maybe there's some glitch in the system that prevents upgrades. You will need help from Sky here & hopefully it's not yet another case of "Computer says no". It may be worth another call as the experience & knowledge of call handlers is bound to vary considerably. If still no joy, post back & maybe a Superuser can escalate to the Sky team here.

'Up to' 80Mbs, which is rather different.  FTTC is fundamentally limited by distance over the copper line to the local fibre cabinet.

I removed the image due to the address showing . However it does show an 80Mbps line with a guarantee of 49-55 Mbps so i don't know why sky can't offer the full speed.

Isp's do reserve  network cards at the cabinet for people who specifically just want 40Mbps.  It could be sky doesn't have any 80Mbps slots at the cabinet

Re: cant upgrade to superfast, openreach speed states 80Mbps

i have tried explaining that to them a couple times, i have setup and order with BT now.

they had a similar issue selling me the full speed but are sending an engineer to check it out before installing and when the engineer submits the speed they will sell me Fibre 2 at 72Mbps

Re: cant upgrade to superfast, openreach speed states 80Mbps

interesting, i never knew that.

so the full background is a long winded one.

so since i moved in to the address 17 years ago. always had issues with speed.

a few years ago i was paying for 20Mbps and only getting 6.

engineer came out and said there was a fault on my line and i was going to a cabinet a fair bit away.

the neighbours at one side of me go to that cabinet.

he said the neighbours at the otherside went to a closer cabinet so he ran a new line to the closer cabinet.

he said it was good for 80Mbps but might take a few weeks for opeanreach to update before i could upgrade.

so using that website to check cabinet numbers and speeds i found that the cabinet i was originally at is no 14.

all the neighbours that show cabinet 14 now have full fibre upto 1600mbps

the cabinet i am now with thats closer is no 8 and the neighbours that go to number 8 alll show FTTC and 80mbps

also they show that full fibre will be installed between now and Dec 2026 on openreach.

mine just says Fibre unavailable.

emailed open reach throught the online form and they said there is no install planned for my address.

its frustrating that i am the only one address in the street that cant get at least Superfast.

@BillyMcFarlane cabinets have no relevance with full fibre they becomeredundant. Full fibre availability is simply down to whether Openreach have laid fibre which passes your address. If it is overhead supply the fibre is fitted to the poles until the pole serving your home is equipped you cant get it. If its an underground supply Openreach will dig up the pavement and fit a small access point for each property. Its fairly disruptive so you will know when it is done. You can check what is known about future plans for your address here https://www.openreach.com/fibre-checker.

Sky only offer the slower FTTC tier of 40/10 where the line handback speed is around 40Mb/s it is furstrating as many of these lines can run faster. We can only speculate why they have that policy but my theory is as the advertised speed is based on the average speed of all customers they dont want to many slower connections.

Re: cant upgrade to superfast, openreach speed states 80Mbps

@Chrisee

The issue i have have is sky will only sell me superfast 35.

Im on FTTC as I don't have full fibre.

The line can accept 80mbps

I want sky superfast at 72mbps.

My next door neighbour on the same cabinet and same FTTC line can get suoerfast at 72Mbps.

The sky technical team i spoke to a couple of years ago agreed that I can get superfast but the computer doesn't have the option to sell me, but if the change house number to next door theg can sell it with no problem.

@BillyMcFarlane

I'm a bit confused now as you said you placed an order with BT but now want to stay with Sky? Are you out of contract with Sky?
