WiFi speed has dropped following local outage

Hello,

 

I'm just messaging as there was an outage in my local area and I noticed my broadband has dropped well below the recommended amount I'm paying for and after 2 days it hasn't come back up yet. I should be on a minimum of 400MB's but according to Oakla's speed test I'm getting about 100MB's coming down the line.

 

After checking the Sky Broadband tester (which sadly did not check and tell me my current speed, as I'd liked to have compared it), it tells me that my connection to the hub is 'poor' but doesn't give me any further information, whereas it was fine previously.

 

Please can somebody advise if any further information is needed and if this can be looked into, as I was expecting my speed to be back to normal now.

@Fatman311 with full fibre is extremly rare for there to be speed problems as there is appreciable loss between the exchanges and the ONT so almost certainly the issue is with the Wi`fi link from the hub to your PC. The factvSky reported a local issue is almodt certainly a red herring. 

 

You need to establish what has changed since you ran the speed test that recorded 250Mb/s. Has equipment been moved, have you got some other wireless kit which is either close to the hub or the PC if neither applies then you need to check for WiFi interference which is quite simple download the WiFi analyzer app onto the PC. Thst will show you all of the WiFi signals in range with their signal strength and channel. Two signals on the same or adjacent channel will interfere the stronger tgecsignals the worst the effect

 

If that is clear then it could be the hub or the service but as stated abovevboth are pretty rare.

@Fatman311  When you run the service checker and it is saying your speed is poor are you also clicking on broadband as that will show your present speed to the hub. When you are doing your speed tests what device are you using and how is it connected to the router?

We lost mini boxes, main TV said no internet. Our Hive went down plus all smart devices. So both wired and WiFi. Have rebooted router this morning and will check again later. We also lost the VOIP so phones dead too!

@Tinners789 Can you please run the service checker, this can be done either via the Sky app on mobile data or use the link below.
https://www.sky.com/help/diagnostics/sky-broadband-diagnostic/sky-broadband-diagnostic

If it finds an external fault it should enable you to book an engineer.


After the service checker completes and if it comes back green all good can you click on broadband to run an updated test please. If you get amber or red please follow the on screen instructions.

Hello Highlinder,

 

I've just checked my speed again today and apparently my connection is now 'good' and its showing the correct total speed, but according to Ookla's speed test its actually slower than yesterday, which was about 100MB's. Pictures attached for reference.

 

I'm using my desktop PC and its connected wirelessly to my router. For context, when my connection was first set up a few weeks ago the speed I was getting was about 250MB's which is fine since I appreciate its wireless and my PC is in a room above my router, latest test states an average of 71.

 

I was aware there was an issue in the area recently according to my Sky app and I have tried resetting my router using the reset button but this doesn't seem to have brought the speed back up yet.

Hello,

 

Primarily I'm using my desktop computer, it's using a Wi-Fi 6 AX200 adapter. As mentioned previously the speeds I was getting were about 250MB's via wifi when the speed was fine and I was happy with that as I'm not able to drill a hole through the floor to plug an ethernet cable directly into the router.

 

Just done another speed test and its still hitting about 70MB's (attached), and on Sky the checker states everything is working fine so I'm still not sure what is causing the issue.

Hello again,

 

So it turns out this unfortunately was entirely my fault. We did have a hit to our speed in the local area at the same time the issue started, however I had a WiFi extender set up in the house which, due to faulty settings, was obstructing the signal after the initial local outage and it just never clicked to me to try switching it off as I wasn't aware that WiFi extenders could block wireless bandwidth if their settings were incorrect.

 

Switched it off and everything is back to normal. I apologise to everyone involved for my stupidity. WiFi extenders going to the charity shop to upset somebody else.
