WiFi signal no good all other rooms of the house,

We have tried WiFi extenders and it isn't even strong enough to give a signal 1m away through a wall! Also keeps loosing signal, so in room goes from full bars to non so very frustrating. Also download speed only 15, upload speed only 12 so very slow!
