WI-FI Sucks big time

OK, so today I had full fibe 900MB installed. Getting 750 at the fibre entry hub so that ticks the box for Sky's 600 MB guarantee. Now the router is in the same porch as the hub. We go through 1 door, then one stud wall, then another stud wall - total distance around 8 meters to the compter and I get 22MB  when I do a speed test. What a joke.

Don't be conned when Sky harp on about fast speeds. As long they provide a single basic router, they are no better than dial up.

They should provide at least one range extender of offer their 'better' router as standard instead on conning customers with a basic router that has no range at all.

I came from BT where I was getting 60MB at the computer over copper and BT router in the same location as the Sky. Looks like I will be cancelling Sky in the cooling off period and heading back to BT. What a waste of time

@Winwell Did you take the Sky Max addon when you signed up, that gives you upto 3 additional wireless extenders, same option as with BT!

You should look to see if the hub can be re-positioned more to a more central location with longer Cat5e Ethernet cable!

Re: WI-FI Sucks big time

No because with the basic BT router I could get 60MB at the computer so with all the hype, I expected Sky's router to be better and I expected 3 digits at the PC minimum but 22MB!!

Clearly their basic router is useless. They should improve it. I shouldn't have to pay more for what I get as basic via the likes of BT

@Winwell Where does the 750 come from in your opening statement!

Re: WI-FI Sucks big time

The broadband is via First Fibre - up to the hub, speed is fast as expected. Sky must have a deal with them to provide the fibre.  But the Sky wifi router is useless. Am going to have to buy a long ethernet cable to connect to the pc. As I said, testing the speed using my phone lterally  standing next to the router I get under 50MB.

Sky should be more up front about this. Advertising super fast BB speeds leads customers to believe thats what they will get. The fact they rent their so called guaranteed wifi router for extra £'s a month says it all really - they know their basic router is no good. I only live in a small bungalow. Internal walls are just stud walls and it can't even deal with two them.

Re: WI-FI Sucks big time

@Winwell Do you know for a fact they are plain stub walls, and not foiled lined plasterboard, with foil lined packing insullation!

Re: WI-FI Sucks big time

Yes as I had those walls built after we moved in - was open plan!

Just tested via my phone standing next to the router - is getting worse

Advertising is regulated, and the regulators acknowledge that customer understanding of the difference between broadband and WiFi is limited.

The Sky Broadband Hub has been around since 2019 and will be in use in millions of properties: apparently your particular location is challenging.  The Max Hub is from 2023 and resulted from the acquisition of Sky Group by the Comcast Corporation.
