Last month or so, everyone around here got all the pavements dug up and loads of cables laid for fibre optic etc: last week I got a letter saying virgin broadband is in our area and I checked it out. BT and Sky said it has not been activated at main exchange I believe and to wait until this month. Today, a guy from Virgin asked if I wanted their service. Told him what I was told but he said they don't need that! Their cables would run alongside our existing old telephone lines? I've never heard of that, he said to contactact Ofcom and tell sky I was leaving because they don't provide the service of the highest speed capable! My contract doesn't run out for about 14 months or so but he was insistent he was right! Actually came back a few hours later with another guy but I said I wasn't interested. Do you think I was right in telling him where to go?

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Davy58 Unless FTTP via the Openreach Network is available then VM may well be the only ones to provide up to 1GB speeds.
You can check what is available via openreach here https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome
As VM use their own network then to have service from them would indeed need additional cable/fibre installing alongside existing cables servicing your property for Sky, both broadband & TV.
As yet VM aren't part of the one touch switch, so if you did jump ship to VM you need to inform/cancel Sky.

@Davy58 The sales guy on the doorstep was correct, Virgin will not use the openreach infrastructure & vice versa.
Although the joint venture between Sky & Virgin has now been officially announced for Ireland, I can't see that happening anytime soon for the rest of the uk.
Trying to switch away from Sky during your min term contract will always be met with an early termination charge,
So if openreach have been upgrading the fibre deployment in your area, this still might take a few weeks before it is available to the end user to order,
Sky then do tend to take a few more weeks to update there systems & database, to enable full fibre to be made available & an order for fttp to be placed.

That might best be described as an imaginative sales technique (i.e. a lie ; )
The availability of higher speed from an alternative provider is absolutely not a legitimate reason to expect to exit a minimum term early without penalty.
