I just switched services from BT to Sky and already, on the first day, it seems I'm not getting the speed promised.
My download speed is around 18 / 20mbps which is extremely slow and not the speed advertised.
And my upload speed is 0.50 mbps. Absolutely in the gutter.
I have been dealing with issues from BT since 07/11/23 and now I'm sick to learn that it's going to be the same no matter the ISP I turn to. I really need some help with this as I work from home and I am losing money without a stable internet connection.

Here is the latest speed test not even a day after switching.

Here is an image of the tests I've done so far
The speed simply doesn't match - It's not even close

Unfortunately if there's a fundamental problem with the physical Openreach circuit arriving at your address then any ISP using the Openreach network will inherit it: that's the basic nature of fixed line internet delivery.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreWhat speed upload did you get with BT? While 24Mb down is slow by modern standards, you'd expect upstream to be better than that on a line that can manage 24 down. Maybe an issue with hardware at the property? I had a really bad connection once and it turned out to be dodgy extension wiring.

Here is the stats.

It was exactly the same with BT - I feel a fool not knowing that Openreach basically has a monopoly in the UK and that there's no escape from them. Seems dystopian lol.
They were supposed to send an engineer on the 11th when i was with BT and they never showed up.
It's been an absolute nightmare this has. I work from home and i am actively losing money since the 7th while this is going on as i cannot work efficiently.

There are other providers (Virgin, some local fttp specialists since the local loop deregulation) who do not use the Openreach network. But availability is very location dependent of course.

As with water, gas and electricity there's really no alternative but to have one telecoms infrastructure carrier, otherwise the air would be full of cables and the roads/pavements nothing but ducts. Privatisation of utilities means there's multiple service providers, but they do typically have only one delivery path to an address.
As @Chodley indicates, in some places there are now multiple competing FTTP companies: this isn't necessarily a good thing, particularly for car suspensions and baby buggy / wheelchair users.

I have already looked and Virgin isn't available in my area.
So I'm just buggered then - No help is coming and I should start looking for a job?

Given your outbound speed is lower than the 1Mbs of the Universal Service Obligation, you could persist with Sky in getting Openreach to investigate. Unfortunately you'd actually have more leverage if you'd stayed with BT because they are the statutory USO provider.

Have you looked at anyone else? Normally you'd know about them because they'd have done a leaflet drop or targetted online advertising. Hey broadband, Box and Swish are three of those who cover fairly wide areas.

Which is funny because I'm getting more support here than I did with BT lol their loop of "go to the website -> call up -> go to the website" was insufferable.
I'm currently on hold with Sky but I am at the end of my rope with this process. It's been going on since 07/11/23. I've lost about £200~
Just got off the phone with a lovely chap - He's escalated the issue to the networking team. Hopefully I can see the end of this issue and it isn't a portent of things to come !

The noise margins on your line for downstream and upstream are too high,
Openreach need to correct or you will have no end off issues.
Ideal values are around 6db....
