Upgrade to fibre doesnt seem worth it

Hi, I upgraded from superfast old-style broadband to full fibre 150 last month but since then I've had nothing but lag and poor stability. Nothing has changed in terms of router/device location/number of devices etc. Any ideas to improve stability/reduce lag?

Sorry to clarify, the lag and stability is actually worse over fibre than with the copper-wired broadband

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

Do you  have an optical network terminal  box and a grey box outside the house, ? The optical network  terminal  will be in  the  house, try pushing  the  power button on it  to turn it off and then  wait  a minute or two  push it again  to restart  it this may help, you may need a sky wifi max hub  aswell

@peter-marlow+1966 You do not need a Sky Max router to be on a FF service, the SR203 is quite capable of dealing with a FF150.

Re: Upgrade to fibre doesnt seem worth it

Hi Peter, yes I have both the external box and ONT inside. The engineer who installed advised against the new hub as he has seen more issues than the Q hub I'm currently using. I have tried restarting the router, should the ONT reboot do anything different?

@Degsy1984 Your Router is in the exact same place when it was connected to the Master socket to now connected to the new ONT?

Hi Jim,  yes it's in the same position. It's the only place it could go to be able to plug it in for power.

@JimM1 Not sure what that screen shot is, sorry it has only just loaded up since my last post. Is that from my router? I've just xhexked my emails and it was actually installed 3rd April

Re: Upgrade to fibre doesnt seem worth it

@Degsy1984 Yes, just showing router up from one off its screens, and the fact that you have same pre/post the change and you are saying nothing new in the mix, then the need to establish if you have an wireless wi-fi issue or a router problem. The only way now to gather such is to leave it on, everytime it is reset all off the good required info is gone. If you look at my picture time for everything is up, and not getting any issue with the Sky Router.

Re: Upgrade to fibre doesnt seem worth it

@JimM1 well I thought it was WiFi as effecting a laptop, a ps portal and mobile phones but then started lagging on ps5 and xbox which are wired straight into the router.

Re: Upgrade to fibre doesnt seem worth it

@Degsy1984 As soon as the picture is cleared i will take a look at it.

Edit:- viewed and looking good, you have been up nearly 4 days with at least NO reset's on the system.

Do you know how to run a ping from a cmd prompt using your laptop. If so ping bbc.co.uk -n 60, 1 minute test i have just done mine over wirless wi-fi on laptop. Post your result just like mine below.

C:\Windows\System32>ping bbc.co.uk -n 60

Ping statistics for 2a04:4e42::81:
Packets: Sent = 60, Received = 60, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 15ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 16ms

Re: Upgrade to fibre doesnt seem worth it

@Degsy1984 No problem run it when you think all is going good if you have that point, and also when you are sure that you think there is a problem. All a process of elimination.

Re: Upgrade to fibre doesnt seem worth it

We just made the same change to fibre this month and the internet is now terrible. The internet cannot handle being on a Teams call and searching on LinkedIn at the same time. No other devices are running, but the internet is really slow and struggling to run a basic video call.
