Ubiquiti router, voip landline
I am switching my broadband from sky essential to full fibre 150, and with that my landline will become a voip service (sky talk).
I need to use my ubiquiti cloud gateway ultra, which I of course can't plug my current landline into. I could use my new sky router, which from my understanding acts as an ATA and bespoke voip client. I could plug my ubiquiti router into that, but this will cause double NAT, inhibiting VPNs..... not great.
Is it possible to get the sky hub to just act almost as an ATA and plug that into the ubiquiti router, with everything else running straight off my ubiquiti router. This would still cause double NAT, but with only the phone effected which I don't mind. But does this even work or will it fail to connect to sky talk ?
If that doesn't work, I assume what will work is to buy an ATA, and plug that into my ubiquiti router.

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
In the final option, using an ATA, I would then switch to an alternative VOIP service.

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@RGreenday The sky hub has to be the first in line and direct on the ONT for the landline to work there is no other way known but someone did post the other day had it all working with a Fritz Router, so that may be a reachout for you to see what can be done.

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@RGreenday You can still use the Sky Hub to connect to the ONT and use the Voice service via the hub.
It shouldn't affect your internal network as that is normally on something like 192.168.1.**
If you have the black broadband hub you should be able to change the routers IP to something like 192.168.0.*
*denotes the last set of numbers which can your choice.
If you have the white hub I can't tell you anything about that as I've had no experience with it.
As you won't be using the hubs WiFi presumably you can also turn that off leaving the ubiquiti to continue working as it currently does.

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
A bit of an aside... but did you get this working? I have just switched to sky and have a sky hub on FTTP connected to the ONT. I want to connect my Ubiquiti Cloud Ultra to the sky hub... (ie. ONT > sky hub > Ultra >switch> APs and devices) and I would switch off Wifi on the Sky Hub.
The problem is that when I connect the Hub to the Ultra's WAN port the Ultra seeis it and connects but the Hub is not assigning an IP address to the Ultra and so the Ultra is not receiving internet input. Is this some issue with the DHCP settings on the Hub? I've tried cloning the MAC address of a trusted device but still the Hub doesn't issue an IP.
Is this normal? Will the sky hub just no work upstream of another gateway like Ultra? What can I do?

@W11llf If you are going to attach the unifi on it's wan port output then you need to make sure it is setup and able to be a router/or some form off routing mode, the sky Hub will take care off the connection to the Internet and you will be double nat, but that may not be much off an issue!

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
I've just posted the same question on another thread however - I've tried this all afternoon!
The sky hub is working fine and connected to the internet. I then set up the Ultra so that the output on the sky hub attaches to the WAN input. The Ultra recognises the Sky hub is connected but the Sky Hub does not allocate it an IP address and the WAN port on the Ultra does not show that the internet is connected.

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@W11llf You have a set up which has double Network Address Translation as the Sky hub's DHCP server will assign an IP4 address to your Ubquiti in the range 192.168.0.2 to .254 it cannot pass through the public IPmaddress assigned by Sky. If your Ubquiti is set to simply use PPOE with no log in it should have an internet connection.

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@Chrisee thanks for your reply.. but the big problem I am facing is that the Sky hub'sDHCP server is NOT assigning an IPv4 address at all....

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@W11llfIf easy test simply connect any other devices to which will prove if its the hub's DHCP server is the problem or simply the router is not requesting an address as it is misconfigured.

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
(OP) my switch to fibre is happening next week so can let you know then. For what it's worth, I've been doing some configuring while the router is connected to a Vodafone router and it's been working fine (excluding double nat problems etc).

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@Chrisee the sky hub works fine with normal client devices but for some reason it is not assigning my Ultra gateway an IP address and so the Ultra isn't able to connect to the internet. There must be a reason the sky hub doesn't 'like' the Ultra but I don't know what that might be... what setting on a Gateway would prevent it from requesting an IP address from a WAN port connection?
I thought it just didn't like the device and the Sky Hub firmware was blocking it and that is why I tried cloning a 'friendly' MAC address but it made no difference.
Tomorrow I will try plugging the Gateway directly to the ONT with IPv6 switched off to see if that works.
I don't think double NAT will be too much of an issue with my setup up but if I can go direct then all the better.
any ideas as to why the Ultra is not receiving an IP address would be helpful! Is it something to do with the fact it is a Gatway requesting the IP rather than a client device?

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@RGreenday I would be very keen to hear whether you are able to connect the Ultra's WAN to the sky hub... and if so whether you had to change any settings on either the Sky Hib or the Ultra itself.... I just don't know what setting there could be that prevents it from getting assigned an IP address by the Hub's DHCP

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@W11llf What IP range do you have set in the gateway, the sky operates on 192.168.0.1 to 254, so you may wish to set the Unifi way off that routing range say similar to the Asus which uses 192.168.50.1 to 254!

Re: Ubiquiti router, voip landline
@JimM1 a very good point. I hadn't checked that as I hadn't managed to get them connected at all. To get it working I stripped it down so that all there was was the Ont>hub>ultra with no other devices to complicate things. The hub was just not assigning an IP to the Ultra. I just don't think there is any setting on the thing that tells it to be a gateway or not because that is all it is. It only works if something is connected to the WAN. I just don't know why it would be set NOT to ask the hub for an IP . I am assuming that for some reason the HUB knows it is a Gateway/Router and doesn't want it attached to the network. So if anyone has connected an Ultra to a Sky Hub SR203 it would be useful to know what settings had to be changed before it was assigned an IP and connected
