Re: Third party router with FTTP

For the record I had a 3rd party router working with 0 configuration from July 2021 until approx Sept 2021 and then suddenly no internet. I now run my own router in a seperate subnet behind the sky router with my own router as the DMZ for the sky router.

All right, I turned on Dual WAN , set WAN as my primary, Ethernet LAN as secondary with LAN Port 1 and Dual WAN mode as Fail over and 'Allow failback' disabled.

On the WAN tab, I selected both profiles/ wan types and populated them with the option 61 information.

Am I correct in assuming that despite the DUAL WAN I only need to connect the ONT with the WAN? Because I still don't have a connection. However the internet light on the router is no longer red but simply completely off.

What am I missing?

@Mtd246  If you are only using one fttp service to give you internet (WAN) services then you don't  need WAN enabled. But, with dual wan enabled have you tried using the other WAN port instead of the primary WAN port ?  And you previously said your WAN light was off. Your manual isn't very helpful on that front as it only shows RED for no ip address or connection and on when its connected.  And have you gone through ASUS's restarting your network sequence p114.  And if you have a usb 3g/4g/5g dongle you could try that as WAN. And the last noddy one have you checked the service status of your broadband in the Sky App ?

> The more adventurous of you could look at setting up your own stateful DHCPv6 PD server on your 3rd party router to sub-delegate an IPv6 prefix to the Sky Hub, as it uses IPv6 to talk to the SBC.  But this hasn't been tested and is definitely not supported.

I'd love to give this a go ... has anyone actually got this working?

i.e. Sky Ultrafast -> 3rd Party Router -> Sky Hub -> Landline

Re: Third party router with FTTP

I've just had FTTP installed and hoped I could use my own router with the ONT (Unifi UDM Pro). Whatever I do I don't get any joy, the router does't seem to obtain an IP address.

Tried all the things mentioned here - enabled IPv6 DHCP, prefix deligation size: 56, DHCP v4 with the option 61 and 0123456789ab@skydsl|foo on the WAN interface. I've waited 5 mins before trying this also. Rebooted ONT and router.

I saw a post where someone had used an older Ubiquiti router with success but for now I've had to resort to double NAT. ONT is Nokia and I'm based on the South Coast.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I know that Unifi UDM Pro has two WAN ports in the community it has been seen that both WAN ports need setting up with DHCP Option 61 and DHCPv6 PD for it to work when only 1 WAN port is used. Everything looks good on the setting side of things with what you've done.

If you check back down this thread about a year ago, you should see my postings having got an Edgerouter X v1.10.7 working.

We have had uninterrupted service since

setup - apart from an OpenReach exchange upgrade which knocked out FTTP off a couple of evenings (early hours) earlier this year.

Settings remain as per thread.  Don't forget to power cycle the ONT and router though.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Thanks both.

@IanW73 it was your post which gave me hope! I assume I don't need to put the Option-61 details with " inside the box?

@mae-3 I will give that a go also.

fingers crossed it's possible with my hardware.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Hmm... still no luck with this.

I've also enabled IPv6 PD on my networks too, do I need to do that?

IPv6 PD isn't necessary but is recommended for total IPv6 functionality with DHCP Option 61. The only thing that I can think of is placing a DHCP Option 60 field before DHCP Option 61 and leaving its field empty.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Hi

I've signed up to FTTP 500mb, which due to be installed in a couple of weeks.

Just wanted to know how 'bad' the current SKY router is (SR203?)

I currently have a  TPlink Archer C7 Router.  Wondering if the SR203 can perform as well (in terms of wireless range and general performance) - any ideas ?

If its comparable performance, then I'd prefer to just stick to the Sky router.  What kind of issues have made to you switch to a 3rd party router?

Thanks

@anaseem

Performance is always down to location and usage. You need to do your own testing to decide if it works well for you or not.

Some have reported good speeds (450mbps) via the Sky hub, some have reported quite low speeds (less than 30mbps)

Re: Third party router with FTTP

@anaseem I had Ultrafast Plus installed yesterday and also have the Archer C7. I haven't used it a great deal yet but the UI and features in the sr203 seem a fair bit worse, IMHO, compared to the C7. An often quoted example on here is that the sr203 does not let you set/change the Primary DNS at router level (if you want/need to do that then you have to do it on all your devices).

Also, bear in mind that if you are getting Sky Talk as well then you can't ditch the sr203 altogether as you need it to plug your phone into [ you won't be able to receive landline calls without the sr203 ].

From what I've read, on here, it should be possible to use both the sr203 and C7 at the same time ( turning off DHCP and WiFi on the sr203 and connecting the C7's WAN port to the sr203 ) but, for now, the sr203 is meeting my requirements so haven't looked into that further.

Yes, that works, but introduces an inevitable double-NAT: whether that's significant will vary between households.  It's generally regarded as a bad thing for keen gamers, for example.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

So even if I get another router and AP with custom firmware (openwrt), the sky phone will only ever work with Sky equirement?

That would be a nightmare, stuck with Sky  hardware forever !

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Until a 3rd party solution is available it's either stick with it or lose talk. I never used the landline so it's not really a loss for me
