Third party mesh router and sky q with mini boxes.

Currently have an sr203 sky hub, a 1TB sky q box, one mini box and a booster. It's not working particularly well (black spots, jittery connection etc) so I'm looking to move over to a third party solution. The whole 180m2 house is fully wired with Ethernet. I've been looking at the ASUs xt8 system but was wondering, if I wire all of the sky q boxes with Ethernet, turn the WiFi off on all the tv boxes/disable the sky mesh and then just use the WiFi on the asus system, will the sky q system work as normal over Ethernet? I.e. will the sky q mini boxes still connect to the main q box and will sky go all work as normal?

@alsmth Hard wiring all your Q kit, regardless of router, should yield better results for Q connectivity,

hardwire all Q kit & the (booster (to extend wifi) then switch off wifi on both Q box's,

would be the easiest option.

 A pair of XT8's will out perform sky's router(especially if hardwired together) & replace it with minimal re-configuration, but you will lose sky talk if it's voip. (You will also need a separate modem for ftth)

Another cost effective option, is by adding a dedicated access point (AP)  depending on needs?

But for your original question❗️ can't see any issues 👍

Thanks for the info @TomThumb5ive , really helpful. We've actually already got the openreach ONT modem installed and have upgraded to sky gigabit but the SR203 can't provide the full speed hence the upgrade (along with other issues mentioned) + Sky said they can't provide the new WiFi max router for Q customers as it's not compatible with the tv boxes. The Q kit is already all hardwired but the WiFi is still operational for mesh functionality currently, will be turning that off with the upgrade though. Not bothered about VOIP. 

Sounds like it should be all good then?

The info you were given was really good, but you will need the pair of XT8.

The SR203 is a very good router within limits and with wired connections you

are wrong that speed is an issue.

WiFi wireless is the KILLER for speed/range of signal and as no homes are the same it is hard

to get solved sometimes, ie black spot etc as you have found out.

 The ASUS xt8 very capable and fast router/mesh so as advised will be good, but also only

as good as the equipment you have and a slight learning curve.

PLEASE do not expect to get 1GB over wireless, over cable ethernet YES

Plenty of help / guidelines on the forum to assist setting up the XT8(s) if needed.

Yes there are newer & better performance rated routers from Asus on the market now, but they all come with a premium price tag to match,

The XT8's have been around couple of years now, but that just means better deals to be had 👍 

plus have you seen all them antennas on the rog & pro range 👀 defo not as pleasing on the eye 🙈

info, sometimes the thought is get new it will be better, then disappointment sets

in, but pair of xt8's good price just now will be wonderfull.

I like ASUS makes good kit with minimal issues, BUT the SR203 is still capable and as you

said, wired back to the booster would be good, so hope there is not something else going on

Yeah I had sky confirm that the hardware was significantly limiting the speed so pretty confident this will have a significant effect as long as all compatible. XT8 seems pretty good bang for buck so think I'm gonna grab that.

Your welcome, assurance is never 100% but i am running the SR203 as primary router, have the ASUS xt8 (1) only as an AP wired ethernet connection on FTTC so only 40/10mbs max and only wish i had FTTP but

only time will tell when that will be available? waiting with baited breath.....

Will be 1st to sign up thats for sure, can have VM 1GB fibre right now, but would not wish that on anyone....

@alsmth the vast majority of devices and apps cannot use the full speed of a Gigabit link. As a guide streaming a service like Netflix in UHD with Dolby Vision and Atmos audio uses less than 50Mb/s. Gaming on a console requires under 10Mb/s. The only practical gain for most people is faster downloads but those are frequently throttled at the server. The main reason for having a Gigafast connection is it allows multiple users at once not for outright speed in every room. Speed is only one part of a good wifi network stability is as important.

To get Gigabit speeds through out most homes will cost a lot of money before investing consider what you need. The Wifi 6e standard is a useful upgrade as units communicate between themselves on a third signal.

If you have Sky Q that network system will constrain speeds unless you hardwire the units.
