Switch from Sky router to 3rd party router

For a number of reasons, I've been interested in getting off the crappy stock Sky SR203 router for some time.

I found a TP Link model mentioned in THIS article which gave me some hope that I could finally move to something different, a TP Link Deco X73-DSL.  The article specifically describes how to set it up for use with Sky broadband (FTTP/FTTC) and the device includes ports to plug your home phone into.

So I've gone ahead and bought one and it seems to work fine apart from the voice bit.  The phone has a dialtone and all seems well, but you can't dial out and inbound calls get the message "sorry the number you are calling is temporarily unavailable."

Wondering if anyone out there has had any success with this model (or similar?) and getting voice working, or if I am flogging a dead horse.

Thanks

No-one has identified a way of accessing Sky Talk Internet Calls through anything but a Sky Broadband Hub, Max Hub or Gigafast+ Hub.  Just having a BT telephone socket or RJ11 port present in the hardware specification isn't enough: the required protocol configuration is baked into Sky-branded routers and otherwise unknown.

A better option would be to leave the crappy Sky SR203 connected with your phone and diable the Wi-Fi on it. Then connect the TP link router. Thats the setup I have with a pair of TP-Link Deco X50 attached to the Sky router.

I don't have a phone but did connect the TP-Link direct to the ONT...it had some bad days with connection and family screaming about internet not working. But seems to be lot stable with Sky router connected to ONT.

Also you can check the Sky router LED status for any faults. Sky support also will not be able to assist if the SR203 is not connected
