Slow internet speeds same time every night

My internet speeds drop every night between 8pm to 12am every night for the past month.

its so slow that I can't watch a live Prime football match without it becoming incredibly pixelated.

I have Sky 500 package and the speed checks each evening are coming back at 6.1mbps.

I need help

@Ste1983 if you are testing on a device connected by WiFi to the hub it is proably an issue with poor wifi signal getting affected by interference from your neighbours' networks.  If so the answer is improve the WiFi in your home either by getting an extender from Sky as part of their WiFi Max package or but your own wifi equipment and use that in p,axe of the Sky hub's  WiFi. Alternstively if practical usexan ethernet cable to watch football which is both cheaper and will be free from interference.

Re: Slow internet speeds same time every night

I don’t think this is a WiFi signal issue though. My devices have been running fine on WiFi for over a year with stable speeds throughout the day. The slowdown only started about 4 weeks ago, and now it happens suddenly at around 8pm every evening for a few hours. That timing makes it seem more like network congestion or traffic management on the ISP’s side, rather than interference within my home.

The router is less than 3 metres away from my main devices, and the WiFi signal strength has always been strong, so local interference doesn’t really fit the pattern.

Has anyone else noticed similar evening slowdowns recently, or found a way around it?

@Ste1983 If it is network congestion there will be not much at all you can do about it, you should Ethernet speed test before and at peak times to see what the result's are, wi-fi is very misleading to get good results for that condition.

Re: Slow internet speeds same time every night

I’ll give some Ethernet speed tests a go and compare them with my WiFi speeds, both before and during the slowdown hours. Hopefully that will show whether the issue is happening before the speeds even reach my router, or if it’s something happening on the WiFi side.

Re: Slow internet speeds same time every night

@Ste1983 Here is some OR Blurb that will possibly help, i find sometimes on my FF500 connection that drop down speed is 200Mb/s slowest i have seen it so far due to the Network being real busy!

1. FTTP is a contended service, up to 32 users can be sharing the 2.5Gb backhaul, so you can never expect the full speed all the time, you may get 900mb when there are fewer people using it. I expect that you are sharing the backhaul with many users. If everyone was using it fully, you may only get 78mbs. Its called statistical multiplexing, which relies on the fact that all users are not utilising their connection fully, all of the time.

BT quote up to 900mb, so you are likely to get much less than that during peak times.

Speed tests pass very little data, so normally give a much higher speed.

2. The max OR connect to a splitter is 30 ( 32 is the splitter maximum but policy is 30 ) not every CBT port provided is likely to have a customer using it , so unless on a ‘new site’ that has no alternatives to OR FTTP the actual number on a splitter is likely to be way less , OR currently have about a 30% take up, so maybe 10 users per splitter , plus the majority don’t take 900Mb but slower profiles , and the chances of those ‘on line ‘ at any one time all and doing something intensive, rather than browsing / Netflix that may be consuming less than 30-100Mb , is slim , that’s why there is a 700Mb minimum speed guarantee on 900Mb …..the 2.4Gb will be plenty ,you would have to be incredibly unlucky to have any consistent congestion.

If you suspect PON congestion, try at a time when there won’t be much activity, late evening or early morning .

Although you have tried somethings to ‘ isolate’ the problem , the most obvious thing to do ( that you haven’t apparently tried ) is use the BT router , without doing that , you haven’t really proved anything , your third party router may great , but even great routers can be mis configured or faulty

@Ste1983 Is it almost exactly 8pm every night? If so it could be something interfering thats set to a timer or comes on at a similar time each evening.
