Slow download speeds
Hi 🙂
I have had the Sky Full Fibre Gigafast for a few months now with a sky guaranteed speed of 600mbps. I have never had 600mbps even though on skys test it says i have. I have run several broadband speed checks and i am usually around 350mbps.
I managed to speak to somebody on live chat and they 'promised' it would be fixed. I check my broadband speed daily and never get anywhere near what Sky says i am getting.
I see on their packages i was supposed to get a new hub/router but i have never received it or had any mention of it. I would phone them but i don't own a mobile phone and my landline phone got pulled off by my grand daughter and now does not work.
I try and get it resolved in online chat help but just go round n round in circles with their answers.
How would i go about getting the hub/router that they say comes with Sky Full Fibre Gigafast? or even get 600mbps like they say i have?
TIA
C. Lloyd

Re: Slow download speeds
How are you running the speedtests? Sky only guarantee the speed down the line to your router. If your using a device connected via WiFi to test your speed then this could be significantly lower. You need to use an ethernet cable.

Re: Slow download speeds
Hi. thank you for your reply.
I am testing speed from broadband speed test sites on the net.
I never had any slow speeds when i had the 150mbps package, my speed was 150+ mbps even upstairs and their phones around the house.
I can't connect via ethernet (well i can but it means unplugging everything and taking my PC downstairs).
The hub/router is below me so only the height of the living room (where the hub/router is located) so roughly 10 feet away.
My daughter tried the speed tests sitting right next to the hub with her phone and was getting roughly the same speeds as i'm getting upstairs.
I see they have a WIFI MAX booster thing but they are asking for a monthly fee for it, i'm sure it said it was free when i upgraded to fiber 900mbps.

Re: Slow download speeds
You need to understand the physical limitations of WiFi itself.
When you say you were getting the full 150mbps when you were on the 150mbps package that is because your WiFi was keeping up with the line speed.
Now that you have upgraded that line speed to 900mbps your WiFi is just running at its maximum possible speed for the conditions it finds itself in. In your case it seems to be around 350mbps. If you wanted higher speeds you would, like I mentioned, need to use an ethernet cable or improve the WiFi conditions in your home which is usually to purchase more powerful hardware.
Adding a booster would likely slowdown your speed rather than increase it because boosters sacrifice speed for range. Additionally Sky wont be interested in entertaing your request for a booster because their requirement for a booster is speeds below 25mbps.

Re: Slow download speeds
Another option could be powerline adapters, however they are dependant on the quality of your electrical wiring & the distance between each plug. You may find they are faster than 350mbps but at the same time you may find they are much worse than 350mbps. When I last used them i couldnt get more than about 120mbps.

I'll have a look at the ethernet cables 🙂
