Slow Internet for weeks then when suddenly full speed
I work for television station and need my 300Mbps broadband that I pay for to download large video files etc.
I have been testing my speeds on Speedtest for weeks, if not months and most of the time I get around 80 - 90 Mbps download speeds. I decided this evening to test it by connecting my laptop directly on a short cable to the hub to see if it was maybe my cable or wifi that was slowing it down. But surprise surprise I still got the same speeds. I then started a "sky" services check which said there is no problem and loe and behold when I did the Speedtest on both the short cable at the hub and also the wifi, I am suddenly am getting 250Mbps download and 50Mbps upload!!!
It seems to me that my bandwidthh has been tapped back until I do an official "Sky" speed test quiery - and then suddenly the floodgates are opened. I am a Diamond client of over 23 years of continual contract and pay for the 300Mbps - I dont expect to get a full 300 but an average of around 80 over months is not really on.
An explanation would be good, but I think I have one myself. What about the guaranteed levels of service or a refund? I will continue to monitor it ever day and see what happens🤔
Disappointed long loyal client😞

Re: Slow Internet for weeks then when suddenly full speed
@NB63 there is zero evidence that Sky limit fibre connections but speeds can be affected by contention as Openreach share the connection to the exchange with up to 30 of your neighbours . Ethernet connections are always likely to be faster than wifi. One possible explanation is unless you had disabled the WiFi connection after connecting by ethernet your PC stayed using the wifi as opposed to the ethernet switching over on your second test this is not uncommon. If you are handling large video files definitely use Ethernet not only for the extra speed and reliability.
Sorry to rain on your parade but Sky have literally millions of Diamond level VIP customers and in oractice means little if anthing beyond a few extra offers in VIP scheme. Certainly that level brings no extra support the speed guarantee is available to all customers and is explained here https://www.sky.com/help/articles/broadband-speeds-explained. read the terms carefully. You can check the speed history to your hub which ithat Sky use for the gurantee by running the service checker which if you click on the link by current test speed will show the history for the last 21 days.

Re: Slow Internet for weeks then when suddenly full speed
Thank you for your comments, but I am quite technical and had done a lot of what you mentioned. However it was interesting that this week Sky called my landline, which I missed, but left a message saying they would contact me again if necessary. And now I get 290+ Mbps on both my cabled AND my WiFi on my phone. So not sure who said what to sky but it's now all of a sudden working perfectly after months of 50 - 80Mbps for months.🤔. Thank you Sky for sorting it!

The vast majority of such calls are from scammers rather than the ISP they claim to be: their crime model works much more effectively when it coincides with an 'internet problem'.

Re: Slow Internet for weeks then when suddenly full speed
Hi Tim
Did do the diligent checks, as I always do with unexpected calls, before ringing the number and it is indeed a verified Sky number so was them. But appreciate your warning👍
