So im having issues where pc/ps5 is experiencing high ping spikes at times when my father is on netflix ( This is literally nearly the entire - poor sod is recovering from a lower limb amputation and waiting a prosthetic limb ) This has only gotten worse recently ( more frequent ) and ive been trying to look into what i can do. If i used Qos i could set aside bandwidth enough for his Netflix to run properly without creating high pings on stuff that doesnt use alot of bandwidth like games on pc/ps5 right? Anyone got any advice for this situation? Might mention i feel like my connection is pretty bad, my area has always been behind on everything - im always on the lookout for something better but so far theres nothing.

So would you say qos is what i need here to eliminate the ping spikes ( afaik are brought on by the netflix useage ).

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Dreamingof5G you can use a third party router with QOS on most Sky services but there are a few things to consider. First is Sky hubs have no modem mode so you need a modem router if you are on a service over a copper line. Secondly the router chosen must support Sky's authentication method which is DHCPv4 Option 61 which not all do. Sky only support their own hubs so you are on your own if you get faults unless you plug the hub back in. Lastly if your landline service plugs into the Sky hub rather than a standard phone point that only will work on a Sky hub.
Assuming you are on standard Sky Superfast thst uses VDSL then most Netflix, TP-Link and Asus units will connect many have Sky VDSL preconfigured. Things are different for Sky Ultrafast over copper as you need a different modem to support G.Fast or if you have fibre to the premises.
Hope that helps.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreIt might not be QoS you need, if both the device using Netflix and your PS5 is connected via WiFi then you may just be struggling for WiFi bandwidth and getting WiFi interference. Have you tried connecting the PS5 via ethernet if it isnt already?
Also can you post your router stats so we can see the state of your connection?

My set up is sky broadband hub that links via ethernet into some TP link powerline adapters which have their own wifi ( 3 with wifi capability and one withtout) . Things like pc/Ps5 then have ethernet from those powerline adapters and smaller devices use the wifi. I disabled the wifi on the Sky router. I have no filters its straight from double faceplate into router. 16 Ipv4 devices connected and 8 Ipv6 devices. Im not 100% but i think this list is devices that had connected at one time but not necessarilystill are? Thanks for the help and advice thus far.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Dreamingof5G have you tried testing by removing some of the powerline adapters? These could be part of the cause issues especially if used in a group as you are? It certainly is an area that needs eliminating before wasting money on a new router.I had numerous issues with one set of TP-Link units of my own and even the more expensive Devolo units I bought to replace them had issues when run in a 1 to 2 set up. One to one seemed fine.

I actually have the Devolo ones not TP link >_> We orginally started with 2 and introduced the others over time. The ping spikes seem to be a more recent thing but theres no habits changed in the house in how everyone uses the internet. I have noticed they do get extremely hot though to the point where the paint has actually dried and cracked near the socket. Apparently this is normal-ish from what ive read from others experiences.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Dreamingof5G can only say my Devolos starting playing up which I solved by removing one and sticking with a straight end to end set up. Fortunately my Deco wifi units dont need them

Seems im getting the spikes whether im using the powerline adapters or straight from the Skyhub - both wifi and wired. The games are Apex legends and Lostark. I start with a reasonably low ms like 16-30 then it just spikes every few mins or so into the hundreds or even thousands. Ive already gone through some connection troubleshooting from their "support" but to no change/improvement.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreWell for starters you have a line fault, shown by the higher than normal noise margin on the line. I think it would be in your best interest to get that fixed first then see if you still struggle while gaming as getting the fault fix may give you that bit of extra bandwidth you need to ensure Netflix and other things can run at the same time.

Ok line fault is atleast a starting point. I cant get in touch with any support via these forums right ill have to phone a number?

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Dreamingof5G you will need to call if the connection test in My Sky doesnt offer an engineer's check. If you dial 150 on your Sky Talk line the call is free.
