Sky Hub 4.2 or Sky Max hub

Hi All

just signed up with the FTTP Sky gigafast 900Mb service and I see that they are going to send me the Sky hub 4.2.

I would have thought for their premier fastest service I would get the newer Sky Max hub to ensure optimum performance.

Is there a way I can force this ?

@GuyTrem  for that you need to to add the sky max subscription add onto your broadband account

edit looking further into it i would give them a call and ask the question has from what i can see the package you have is the only one that comes with that hub as standard

Re: Sky Hub 4.2 or Sky Max hub

I just called them and was told it was logistical supply issues why I am getting the 4.2 hub. I was advised to wait till my system was activated and then call back to requerst a free upgrade.

Failing that I might just buy one off Ebay .

The question is....are they actually better than the 4.2 hub ?, I would have thought so considering they are ...what 4 years newer in technology ?

@GuyTrem

Any being advertised on eBay and other sites will be stolen property as they are only loaned to Sky customers.

Thst depends on your definition of better. The new white hub does offer WiFi6 against the WiFi5 of the black hub which means in the area close to to the hub devices that support that standard can access the full 900Mb/s of the fastest package Sky sell while the hub 4.2 tops out around 700Mb/s. In practice however very few apps or activities can ever use that extra bandwidth so while speedtests look better in practice nothing is lost. Move two rooms away and speeds are similar. The new hub's can use a wider range of 5GHz channels that can helpif your home is subject to interference.

If you have Sky Q boxes the black hubs are a far better match as the tv boxes act as wifi extenders a function you lose with the white hub. Having had both routers I find them much the same. The newer hubs are more locked down but easier for a novice as settings are in the My Sky app shile the black hub still uses a less user friendly web interface which allows more options like the ability to split WiFi bands and manually control channels used etc whichbtge app does not allow.

In terms of range I found they are both roughly the same so I use a third party system operating in wifi access mode for my own wifi devices.

Dont buy off eBay as the newer hubs have to be added to the My Sky app by Sky to ooerate correctly.
