Hi all,
I'm interested in enhancing my home network security with pfSense but Sky doesn't support bridge mode. I'm considering a cloud-based solution (e.g., using a VPS with pfSense installed) as a potential workaround.
* Can anyone share their experiences or provide guidance on setting up a cloud-based pfSense router with Sky Gigafast?
* Are there any specific considerations or limitations with this approach that I should be aware of?
* Has anyone encountered any issues with Sky's service or terms of service related to using a cloud-based router?
I'm particularly interested in:
* Performance impact: How much impact might a cloud-based solution have on internet speeds, especially with Sky Gigafast?
* Latency: Are there any noticeable latency issues with this setup?
* Cost-effectiveness: What are the typical costs associated with running a cloud-based pfSense instance?
Any advice, tips, or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Even with around six million Sky Broadband subscription households in the UK, I think there's a fair chance you'd be the first ; )
Given this is generally a forum for posting connection problems rather than a wider user group, readers may well not generally be best placed to offer such advice.

A forum search would suggest a few users attempting to have pfSense running locally, but I have to say I'm struggling with how a cloud instance would operate in conjunction with a domestic broadband service and ISP router. At the very least I think you'd need different routing hardware at your end, at which point it might as well host the installation anyway. Alternatively, each client device would need to VPN through to the cloud instance (which appears to be a legitimate topology used in business) but that isn't really 'enhancing your home network security' itself.

Hi
Thanks for your response. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.
I'm still exploring different options for enhancing my home network security and was curious about the potential of cloud-based solutions for using pfSense. I understand the limitations of a traditional home network setup in this context.
I'm particularly interested in the potential benefits of a cloud-based approach, such as:
* Centralized Security: Implementing advanced security features like VPN endpoints, content filtering, and intrusion detection in a centralized and scalable manner.
* Flexibility and Scalability: Easily adapting security measures to changing needs and leveraging cloud provider features for enhanced availability.
I'm aware that this would require significant changes to my home network setup, likely involving client-side VPN connections. I'm primarily trying to understand the feasibility and potential benefits of such an approach, along with the potential limitations and challenges.
I'm not planning to implement this immediately, but I'm interested in gathering information and exploring the possibilities.
Thanks again for your input.
