Today I received a call from a man stating he's from the technical department at Sky. He asked: "Have I noticed my speed dropping at times." I have been having trouble with my internet dropping and having to reboot almost daily and I told him this. He said they would send a technician around to check the WiFi and I may need a new router. In the meantime, he wanted me to open an app on my iPhone to download a server called VNC and I felt uncomfortable with him asking me to download it as I think they were planning to get access to my mobile and bank logins.
The man sounded Asian but I'm not sure where the call originated. There was that tell-tale click on the line before his call came through.
I told him that I didn't feel that Sky would be asking me to do this and I rang off.

You were right to be cautious. Sky don't call customers to inform them their speed is dropping.

I am 100% certain its a scam. Sky doesn't ring up proactively and certainly don't ask you to download software
Sky Stream , Sky Superfast, SR203 router, Tp link td w9970 + Asus RT AX58U (backup), Xbox Series X, google home mini, LG 55 inch uhd tv, with Dolbyvision, samsung a5 2017 and samsung s21
If I get it right mark as answered
If I get it wrong humour me
If I say something you like give a thumbs up

Re: Scam caller - technical department - download speed issues on my wifi
I got a call from someone claiming to be from sky from a UK Liverpool number. He asked me to check the speed of my broadband using the Google speed test site. I don't think that accounts for the device I'm using as it gives different speeds on difference devices. He then asked me to open Google play. I said I wasn't comfortable downloading anything, to which he re-laid I can forget about my broadband and sky will disconnect it in a few days. When I pressed him on this he asked if I was an educated man. I'm sure there is no education requirements to have sky? I replied no and he put the phone down.
I can't seem to activate sky sheildbto block the number either. It always seems to be down.
Also disappointed sky has given my number out. Didn't have such calls with Virgin. These guys new I had a sky router.

No one has divulged your number. These will be random calls.

They know you are a Sky customer because information on which numbers are in use by a particular telco circulates within the legitimate global industry for billing purposes.
