Router says one speed, devices say another.

I have had an ongoing issue with my rural broadband and it is hurting my home business.

About once a week my broadband shuts down to less than 1mb/s as measured from connected devices including an ethernet connection.

However in the router stats it shows

Connection Speed 11399 kbps 1737 kbps

poll interval set to 10 seconds but these figures never change, they have stayed the same for weeks, so I don't believe them because even in normal conditions they'd vary slightly. The figures at the top of the page, for txpkts etc., do change every 10 seconds but not these. So I am guessing that SKY only ever see these speed figures and figure everything is OK.

Given that you can't talk to SKY anymore, what can I do?

Thanks.

@JayBee5 if you have a Sky Business briadband service this forum cannot help. If you are using a Sky domestic connection for business purposes beyond then that is your choice but it gives you no priority and I would not mention it if you call Sky. There lines will be very busy today  after the storm butvyou can talk to them if you persist.

Sounds like you are on a slow partial fibre connection if you post those connection stats forum members can advise more completly. The stats are derived from the modem in the hub which reports the connection speed to the cabinet. Given they are derived from the hardware they are accurate.

However that is somewhat different from speeds measured at a device. If connnected by wifi that links speed can vary as it can be affected by interference. The second factor on slower connections is the device can only access the bandwidth thst other devices are not using at that time. In todays allways connected many devices use downtime to download updates and to run other house keeping activities which on faster connections is ok as there is ample bandwidth but on your connection thst is quite likely to be an issue unless every other device is powered down . Far less likely is an issue with throughput from Sky's end but on such a slow connection that is very unlikely.

Re: Router says one speed, devices say another.

Thanks for replying.

Firstly - how do I get through to SKY? If I call it's just an automated service with no way of choosing an option to speak to someone.

Secondly - how can the reported speed on the router be exactly the same for the last few months i.e. 11399 kbps? It never changes.

Thirdly - it's not about the number of attached devices, for test purposes I have attached one at a time including ethernet and all report the same low speeds.

Fourth - it kind of seems to coincide with bad weather, which is fair enough but the router always reports 11399 kbps.

Thanks.

@JayBee5 when the lines are working normally, ie not after a major storm,  simply stay on the line do not accept options of texts etc. Sky have several thoudand agents taking calls but have over 10 million customers of whom today a lot have issues...

The stats report the speed to modem is connected at and the time in hours it has been connected while it stays connected the speed wont change. If you post the stats forum members can explain what they mean.

If you only have one device connected ie nothing else is powered and can connect by wifi you are correct assuming of course the PC itself is not downloading something in the background which with windows updates cannot be excluded.

If you doubt the hub simply reboot it and see what it tells you then.

I suspect that's a.capped speed as the result of Openreach Dynamic Line Management (DLM) being in effect to keep a rather poor ADSL line in action.

Edit: actually it can't be ADSL because that outbound speed is too high, which means it's a really bad FTTC line, either by being damaged copper or, or copper clad aluminium, or on the ragged end of the distance limit.

Yes we are some distance from the cabinet. So how come it always shows the same speed? Any ideas?

That's how DLM operates: it increases line speeds in steps until it hits a point where stability starts to fall off.

Re: Router says one speed, devices say another.

OK, I kind of understand - but the speed it is reporting is nothing like the speed I am actually getting - for instance it was below 1 mb/s at points yesterday.
